Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. SIGNED by the author to title-page, and additionally dated at the time of publication. An exciting debut and an intriguing emergent new talent in playwriting, Esme's striking and magnetic first work is at once an enchantingly playful and nostalgic comedy-thr…iller play, suffused with broad, delightful tropes that deliver a hugely satisfying overall achievement. But don't just take my word for it. Described as "really exciting and unusual" (The Hope Theatre, London) and "powerfully suspenseful" (The Depot for New Play Readings), the 22-year old playwright's first play was a finalist in both The Larking House Playwright's Intensive 2023 and The Depot for New Play Readings. "Living with an Alien" is a two-act thriller, with strong comedic notes, in which a murder has occurred in an isolated village - and seems to have otherworldly origins. Michael, a resident in the village, is intrigued and soon discovers that his wife, Lara, is responsible for the crime, and, furthermore, has concealed her terrifying, true identity. When suspicion falls on Michael he realises the full extent of Lara's betrayal, and soon Michael and his uncle Frederick appear to be at her mercy. Denied access to outside help, they are forced to use their ingenuity to escape her non-human clutches. Esme Waters has recently completed her second comedy-thriller, Mr Thrushby's Adventure, and has similar hopes for publication and production. As New in the publisher's original (alien) green stiff card wrappers, as issued. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Jerome K Jerome, Three Men in a Boat, Vintage 1956 Edition in D/J. Published in London by J. M. Dent, this 1956 edition is in good vintage condition, with no serious defects. There are no ownership names or inscription, and the pages within…are clean and free from soiling. The book remains in its original orange cloth boards, lettered in gilt to spine, and is in well preserved condition, showing light age-related spotting to its fore-edges. The dust-jacket (to which I have fitted a removeable protector) is a very attractive one and presents well with light overall signs of vintage wear consistent with its age. The jacket rear shows publisher's adverts and there is a mark / stain present. Overall, though, a nice example of the jacket, and with the colours unfaded. Three Men in a Boat is a classic English gem: Jerome's nostalgic, comic account of a boating holiday between friends (to say nothing of the dog) on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford has endured - the jokes seem fresh and witty even today. And here we have a pretty, vintage copy to tuck under your best boating arm! Never has messing about on rivers seemed so appealing. Dimensions: Approx. 12.5cm x 19cm.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. A scarce, vintage, 1984 format. And best of all, it's a superb, unread, example in near Mint condition. Back in the 1980s, Franklin Library was selected by the Oxford University Press to publish a special edition for subscribers called "The Oxford Library of…The World's Greatest Books", and this is one of the classic, fine books from their highly collectible series. Stendhal's classic is not an easy entry to acquire in this particular series from 1984 (most of the series titles you see are from easier-to-find editions from this publisher). This edition also features the inclusion of some excellent illustrations by Jean Paul Quint, as well as a special message for subscribers from the editors. This lovely, clean, and bright book is quarter bound in premium gilt design red with the cloth-covered boards in leatherette, and decorative, marbled paper endpapers. The spine bears an attractive gilt design. All page edges are gilded in 22 karat gold and printed on high-quality paper with sewn pages for extra strength and durability. There are three raised bands to the spine and the sewn-in satin ribbon bookmark is present. Jean Paul Quint (illustrator).

Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. One of a small amount of copies of the first printing to bear (applied to title-page) the themed publisher's bookplate that was SIGNED by both the Dutch author and the translator. It was announced, in August 2020, that this book was the winner of the prestig…ious 2020 International Booker Prize - making its author the youngest ever winner of the prize. The surprise choice culminated in the award's delay, because of the pandemic, and prior to the award announcement the author's debut novel had apparently sold fewer than a 1000 copies in the UK - which suggests a relatively small initial print run. The collector should be aware that the publisher then reprinted the book after the award announcement - but, oddly, retained the full number line of 1-10. However, the reprint edition (despite possessing a full strike line) is easy to distinguish as such since it bears endorsements to its front-cover, a different lay out and wording to the rear of the cover, and is also slightly smaller in format. This particular copy, of course, is the correct, true first edition - with no endorsements. Set against the stark backdrop of a dairy farm, "The Discomfort of Evening" was a best-seller in the Netherlands, and is described, by Kirkus Reviews, as "startling." The UK edition precedes the American release. Issued in softcover, as a PBO, with French flaps. Translated from the Dutch by Michele Hutchinson. A Very Fine copy. As New. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, Collins 1952 Hardcover with Scarce Dust-Jacket. Published in London as a "Collins New Classic" title, this clean and well-preserved 1952 edition is unusual since it still retains its original and distinctive orange dust-jacket. I…t bears the publisher's series number "411" foot of spine. In sound, vintage condition, with no serious defects, this post-war edition is free from ownership names or inscriptions (there is just a tiny letter "c" written in biro to top right of endpaper), and the pages within are clean and free from soiling or creasing. The book remains in its original blue cloth boards, lettered in gilt to spine, and shows a little fading to the top of its spine. The binding has developed a minor "lean" due to storage over the years. With a frontispiece of the author, short introduction (by V. S. Pritchett), and bibliography, the book presents well overall. The dust-jacket (to which I have fitted a removeable protector) is in very good preservation, showing a little minor edgewear chipping consistent with its age. A nice example of the jacket, and with the vivid colour unfaded. Dimensions are approx. 11.5cm x 18.5cm.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. SIGNED to title-page. An especially appealing copy that is, additionally, pre-publication dated ("27/8/19" and with "Oxford" added below) by the author, which makes it both special and scarce. The official release date for Ru…shdie's Booker shortlisted book would follow a couple of days later, on August 29th, but a small number of copies were signed & dated in this manner at Philip Pullman's old haunt, The Sheldonian Theatre, in the heart of Oxford, just a little prior to release; a copy of the e-ticket is loosely inserted here. Rushdie's frisky rewrite of "Don Quixote", "Quichotte" effectively translates La Mancha into Trumpland where "visions and other phantasmagoria are to be expected." Very Fine in dust-wrapper. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Beautifully illustrated by Narnia artist Pauline Baynes, and with an amazing, full wraparound dust-jacket, this vintage, ninth impression (1975) of Tolkien's "Tom Bombadil" was published in London by Allen and Unwin. Unusually, the book is f…ree of any ownership names or inscriptions, and the binding is sound and secure. In very good condition, with no serious defects, the book does show some age-related wear / rubbing to the top-and-tail of spine but overall presents well. Within, the white pages do not show any foxing, spotting, or creasing. The handsome, original dust-jacket (price-clipped) matches the pictorial boards and also presents well, with the lovely design colours by Baynes nicely unfaded. Signs of vintage wear are largely suggested by wear to the top left spine area and the jacket's extremities. (I have fitted a removeable dust-jacket protector to ensure it remains nice for the future). One of the most intriguing characters in The Lord of the Rings, the amusing and enigmatic Tom Bombadil, also appears in verses said to have been written by Hobbits and preserved in the 'Red Book' with stories of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and their friends. "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" collects these and other poems. A worthy and early Tolkien edition of this popular work. Dimensions: Approx. 14.5cm x 23cm. Pauline Baynes (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dumas, Count of Monte Cristo, 2 Vols Odhams Press 1930s Brown Cloth Gilt Bindings. Published undated in London by Odhams Press, this is a terrific, vintage, 2-volume matching set of Alexandre Dumas' engrossing masterpiece. Though undated, the books were published in the 1930s, and greet the world… today in a clean, handsome, and well preserved condition. Presenting well, both pre-war volumes are in their original bindings of faux leather decorative brown boards with gilt titles to spine and publisher's blind-stamp design to front board and spine. Featuring frontispieces to both, and a brief introduction (in volume 1), the books are finished off with the rather nice publisher's tinted top edge which makes them quite a distinctive-looking set to display and own. There are no ownership names or inscriptions and the bindings remain sound and square. Externally, the boards display light storage rubbing to their spine and corner extremities and age-related toning and gentle marking to the closed page fore-edges. Internally, aside from a few spots of foxing to the opening pages of vol.1, both books are thereafter in very clean preservation. A nice set. Dimensions: Approx. 13cm x 19cm.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. SIGNED directly to title-page, and not, as is common and less desirable, to a tipped-in leaf. (For purposes of easy clarification, the title-page bears the publisher's device and "2019" to bottom right of page; copies signed to the… inserted leaf lack this). The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2020. Whitehead's follow-up to the 2017 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, "The Underground Railroad", makes him only the fourth writer ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction twice (placing him in the illustrious company of double-winners such as William Faulkner and John Updike). However, the UK first edition, published by Fleet, is in our opinion highly likely to remain a scarcer format than the Doubleday counterpart. The author is a National Book Award Winner and "Nickel Boys" was cited as one of Time Magazine's 10 best fiction books of the decade. A very worthwhile signed 1st to invest in. Very Fine in Very Fine dust-wrapper. Signed by Author(s).

Collectors will be aware that the quality of the author's water-based pen signature on these shiny bookplates varies significantly: many examples are compromised in terms of collectable appeal as they display a faint, or pale grey, signature. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. SIGNED to title-page. All elements pristine, this is a one-of-a-kind copy, attractively complete with the following: both states of the promotional pre-release samplers, each of which is SIGNED. The first sampler contains the… extract that begins "As darkness was falling" and is signed vertically to the margin of the first page of text; the second sampler bears the "exclusive new extract" roundel to its front and contains the "Moonlight and Bloodshed" extract. This is signed to foot of last page. To the best of our knowledge, only a tiny few of the samplers were ever signed by Philip Pullman - and we had them all. The promotional notebook - SIGNED to inner front-cover, and, again, the only one to have been signed we are aware of. Finally, the red cloth promotional tote bag and glossy bookmark (because of their materials, these are not signed). A fabulous Pullman package and an extremely rare one. Chris Wormell (illustrator). Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. DOUBLE SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION. Signed by both author and illustrator to the limitation page: copy 93 of only 100 copies. As New. In the publisher's original quarter bound Brillianta pink cloth, blocked in black foil, over gre…y paper covered boards, titles in black to spine, black endpapers. Illustrated throughout. Housed within the red Brillianta slipcase, with a laminated colour illustration in a debossed panel. The whole should be presented as complete: that is, the book wrapped in brown paper, label printed 93/100 applied and numbered by hand to match the number in the book, and packed in the postal carton with label (barcoded, publisher details, and also numbered). Most copies that surface will have been opened, and these elements discarded. This is one that remains in its direct state from Faber. The book is memorably introduced by Ishiguro himself, and The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain collects the sixteen song lyrics he has written since 2007 for world-renowned American singer, Stacey Kent. An exquisite coming together of the literary and musical worlds, the lyrics are infused with a sense of yearning, melancholy, love, and the romance of travel and liminal spaces. The collection is illustrated by the acclaimed Italian artist, Bianca Bagnarelli whose work perfectly captures the atmosphere and sensibility of the songs. Bagnarelli, Bianca (illustrator).
