Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Diamond 128mo. All edges gilt over red. 672 printed pages. Fine India paper. Printed by Horace Hart, Oxford University Press. Rounded corners. Inner gilt scrolling dentelles. All edges gilt over red. Original black endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription on verso of front free endpaper, dated December 31st, 1898. 48 x 56mm. Original black morocco. A gilt cross on the upper cover. Welsh, 1857. "Diamond" was the traditional name used by British typefounders for one of the smallest commercially available type sizes. It typically measured just 4.5 point (or sometimes 4point), which is significantly smaller than the 10-12 point font commonly used in modern books and documents. A very small, portable devotional prayer book in very good condition. These miniature books were immensely popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras (late 19th and early 20th centuries) for people with acute eyesight and bright gas mantles. They were considered a triumph of printing technology and were often bound in fine leather with gilt edges and presented as gifts, sometimes featuring personalized silver plaques or inscriptions dated around the turn of the century. The practicality of printing hundreds of pages of tiny text in a book less than half an inch thick relied heavily on the use of ultra-thin, yet opaque, "India paper" (a precursor to modern Bible paper). This allowed a 500+ page book to remain incredibly slim and lightweight.

Nimmo's Miniature Series (Secular), 8 - Welsh incorrectly numbers this title '5' and the only record cited is from the 1910 publisher's catalogue. Original tan suede/reverse calf yapp style binding; spine with gilt titling. Several minuscule cream spots on the back cover. Welsh, 4133. WorldCat locates no copies worldwide. The series primarily featured works of classic literature and poetry by authors such as Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Burns, and Christina Rossetti. Such books were popular as gifts, as evidenced by numerous surviving copies containing gift inscriptions with dates from the 1910s to the 1940s. Keats wrote 64 sonnets in total, so this book presents a curated selection of the best 38 sonnets rather than a complete collection. His poems had been in publication for less than four years when he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. They were indifferently received in his lifetime, but his fame grew rapidly after his death.

For the first week of May, we ar informed, the British museum is closed. All edges gilt. Original pale yellow endpapers. Later ink inscription on verso of blank preliminary, 'Taken from my father's pocket', and dated January 31st 1916. 88 x 52 mm. Contemporary full burgundy roan. Very slight bowing to upper cover. Tiny amount of light rubbing. Unknown and unrecorded imprint. There are quite a few well-documented series of nineteenth century and older English almanacs - but some, such as this are local and unspecified imprints that fly under the radar. While the British Museum was undergoing massive expansion in the 1840s and had suffered the vandalism of the Portland Vase in February 1845, the May closure was a planned, regular occurrence, not an emergency closure.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. Eight folded leaves in concertina with original hand-drawn lithographs by the artist Alan Powers. 89 x 63 cm folded to 99 x 68 mm. in original stiff card envelope. "500 copies, lithographs hand-drawn at the Curwen Studio and printed by Adrian Lack at the Senecio Press, December 1986, for private distribution by the publisher Peter Sampson and the artist Alan Powers"- colophon. Fold-out Christmas card featuring charming, hand-drawn lithographs of imaginary shop fronts. Produced by Merivale Editions, it represents a collaboration with the Curwen Studio, ensuring high-quality artistic production for its limited run of 500 copies. OCLC, 34764911. WorldCat locates three copies worldwide (Oxford, Delaware, and Occidental College University Libraries). This ephemeral work was designed as a small, foldable Christmas card, highlighting detailed, intimate illustrations. This scarcity makes it a desirable collector's item. The content features charming illustrations of "imaginary shop fronts," evoking a sense of nostalgia, similar to the branding of the "Quality Street" chocolates which aimed for a sentimental, old-fashioned feel. The name Quality Street came from a play written by J.M. Barrie, who would later go on to write children's classic Peter Pan. The original project started at a lunch meeting in 1986, where Powers was commissioned for other prints, and the Christmas card idea was developed as a creative use of an offcut from the standard-sized paper, demonstrating an efficient and innovative use of materials.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. [20] pages. Printed in red and black. 1938 1d. pale scarlet postage stamp depicting King George vi partly stuck onto front paste-down endpaper. Rounded corners. Colour illustrated paste-down endpapers, depicting pre-war canned food from England. No inscriptions. 44 x 60 mm. Publisher's dark blue embossed card simulating leather. Spine and corners somewhat rubbed. No copies found in WorldCat worldwide. Hitherto unrecorded and a surprising survivor since its very purpose was entirely ephemeral. The canning factory at Bardney was purpose-built in 1931 by A.W. Foster and Company. It was one of the early large-scale fruit and vegetable canning operations in Lincolnshire, a county famous for its agriculture. Despite building the factory, A.W. Foster & Co. only operated it independently for a short time. In March 1932, the business was purchased by the American-owned John Morrell and Co. Ltd. Even after the 1932 sale, the Foster's and 'Daisy' brand names were considered so valuable that they continued to be used for marketing until at least1946, when the company was fully merged into John Morrell & Co. By 1936, the factory was a major local employer and a key part of the national supply chain for 'English garden' style canned vegetables, notably peas and fruits, which were marketed under the high-quality 'Daisy' label. The site remained a hub for food production under various owners (including Premier Foods and BP Nutrition) for over 60 years until its closure in April 1994.
