First edition; 8vo (22.5 x 14.5 cm); numerous full-page photographic plates, ink presentation inscription to front free endpaper verso, dated 1900, loose contemporaneous postcard, occasional light spotting but in the main bright; contemporary blue calf, upper and lower panels with inner beaded border in blind and gilt double outer borders, gilt spine with raised-banding, contrasting title-piece in gilt and red morocco, marbled edges, the spine with light wear and fading, and a upper side edges slightly crinkled, otherwise a very good copy. The first edition of Sterry's history of Eton College, from its grammar-school foundation under Henry VI to its function at the end of the nineteenth century as a 'teacher of men and a nurse of statesmen' (p.345). With presentation inscription in ink to front free endpaper verso for 'J.B. Bailey Hawkins, Eton College, Christmas 1900, JUMH', and accompanying loose postcard of 'Eton College from Barnspool Bridge' postmarked Windsor 4th July 1905. Seller Inventory # 107183
