Pontedera became prefect of the Padua Botanic Garden the year following publication of this his first work on newly discovered and noteworthy plants of the Veneto. It is classified according to the Tournefort system widely used at the time for 'its simplicity and ease in use' and for the fact that 'Tournefort settled in practice the circumscription and names of so many plant genera' later to be further clarified by Linnaeus (Morton). Pontedera's directorship spanned one of the most important periods in botanic research, and he corresponded with those actively engaged in building significant collections; the letter to William Sherard in the above work commenting on the latter's botanic garden at Smyrna (Izmir) during his consulship there is of note since Sherard communicated widely, ultimately settling in Oxford to which he donated his collections. Pontedera's sources reflect the important plant collections of the period in Europe, also nearby experimental gardens such as those presided over by Paolo Clarici (Villa Marocco) and Antonio Tita (Hortus Maurocenus).
