Item description from seller

First British edition, telling the story of the first panda to be brought from China to the United States. Harkness, a New York socialite, journeyed from Shanghai to Sichuan in 1936 and located a panda cub in the province's bamboo forests. Named Su Lin, the cub became the main attraction at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. This edition was published concurrently with the first American edition. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece, 17 half-tone plates. Original purple cloth, spine lettered in black, map endpapers, top edge purple. With dust jacket. Title page with contemporary ownership signature of one E. Ryling. Extremities rubbed; jacket unclipped, loss at head of spine, old adhesive tape repairs: a fine copy in good only jacket.
