Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, viii, 196 pp, [7] pp ads. tables, graphs. A pioneering study by an important economist and statistician. From a contemporary review in The Economic Journal: ".this is the first time, we believe, that the higher statistics, which are founded on the Calculus of Probabilities, have been used on a large scale as a buttress of economic theory. For example, the method of correlation is applied by Professor Moore to test the elements of truth contained in the variant theories of wages; that they depend upon the cost of subsistence, upon the standard of life, or upon the labourer's productivity." And from a 1968 review by N. Arnold Torres of a reprint edition: "Henry L. Moore was a pioneer in the ingenious use of statistical techniques to provide "a perception of the direct connection between pure theory and concrete life" (p. 23). His "laws" consisted of tested statistical associations between empirical data, in contrast o the previously accepted theorems of economics which, he believed, had consisted of little more than hypotheses (pp. 6-7)." Contents: Introduction; I Statistical Laws; II Wages, Means of Subsistence, and the Standard of Life; III Wages and the Productivity of Labor; IV Wages and Ability; V Wages and Strikes; VI Wages and the Concentration of Industry; VII Conclusions. Spine-ends bumped and corners a trifle so, spine a trifle faded, tape-marks to gutter of pp 118/119, otherwise a Good bright copy. Seller Inventory # ABE-58370
