First edition, in the publisher's original green cloth binding with decorative gilt to the front boards. The first English translation, first printing, of this noted thirteenth century Icelandic Saga, describing events between 920 and 1020. This is the longest and most highly developed Icelandic saga. Translation by George Webbe Dasent. Dealing the blood feuds in the Icelandic Commonwealth. Based on historical events, and embellished through centuries of oral tradition; the protagonists are the friends Njáll Þorgeirsson, a lawyer and a sage, and Gunnar Hámundarson, a formidable warrior. Icelandic sagas played an important part in Icelandic cultural heritage, but also helped develop the prose narrative in Europe. With two folding maps and three full page plates to volume one, and a frontispiece and a folding map to volume two. Collated, complete.Bound by Burn, Kirby St. Label to the rear paste down. in the publisher's original green cloth binding with gilt to the front boards. Externally, sound with slight rubbing. Bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Tear to cloth at the head of the spine and joints, moreso to volume I. Fading to spine and slight marking to boards. Hinges slightly strained but holding firm. The odd mark to endpapers, with a binders label to rear paste down. Front endpaper detached to volume one, with frontispiece tender.
