After all that has been said above, there is no necessity for my explaining to the reader, how I happened to come upon Lebedyan, five years ago, at the very height Of the annual f air.1 We sportsmen may drive forth, some fine morning, from our more or less hereditary estates, with the intention Of returning by the evening of the f 01 lowing day, and, little by little, Without ceasing to shoot woodcock, finally arrive on the blessed shores Of the petchora River. Moreover, every one who is fond Of dog and gun is a passionate respecter Of the most noble animal in the world - the horse. Thus, I arrived at Lebedyan, put up at the inn, changed my clothes, and set out.
