Synopsis

Excerpt from Spiritual Development of St. Paul

This little book has occupied me at intervals nearly two years in writing, and a good many years in thinking. The problem I set before myself was this: assuming that the thirteen epistles of St Paul are genuine, and waiving for the present all ques tions of Biblical criticism, is it possible to regard these as marking the stages of a progressive develop ment? Is it possible out of these alone, and with out the aid of any foreign materials, to construct a fairly correct picture of the successive phases of Paul's Christian experience? The design of the book is therefore a limited one; it is strictly con fined within these thirteen epistles. Even within these boundaries its title involves an additional limit. On the one hand it is a development of St Paul, not of Saul of'tarsus; on the other hand, it is his spiritual development, as distinguished alike.

This book delves into the spiritual journey of a pivotal figure in early Christianity, tracing his evolution from a devout Jew to a passionate advocate for a new faith that embraced both Jews and Gentiles. The author meticulously examines the letters written by this figure, using them as a window into his inner world and the development of his religious convictions. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly changing religious landscape, as Christianity transitioned from its Jewish roots to become a universal movement. The book explores the challenges and conflicts that arose during this period, including the tension between Jewish traditions and the inclusive message of the new faith. Through a careful analysis of the subject's writings, the author reveals the deepening of his understanding of concepts like grace, law, and the nature of God's kingdom. The book sheds light on the subject's evolving views on social structures, family, and the interconnectedness of humanity, ultimately presenting a portrait of a man who transcended cultural boundaries to envision a world united by love and faith. By illuminating the spiritual development of this key figure, the book offers profound insights into the formative years of Christianity and its enduring message of universal love and redemption.
