Excerpt from Magnetic Surfaces and Neoclassical Transport in Stellarators
Drift step size is the maximum of pe and w, in this case electron transport, which scales like the square of the step size, is enhanced. Numerical results confirm that resonance of the electric potential at the rational magnetic surfaces may cause anomalous electron transport. The conclusion is substantiated by a calculation of the confinement time using the Monte Carlo method. Introduction of an electric potential as small as two percent of the temperature may bring down the confinement.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate realm of plasma physics, specifically focusing on the challenges of confining high-temperature plasma within the unique geometry of stellarators. It explores the fundamental concept of magnetic surfaces and their role in ensuring plasma confinement. The author embarks on a journey through the historical development of plasma confinement research, highlighting the limitations of classical theories in explaining the observed anomalous electron transport in stellarators. Employing advanced computational techniques, the book investigates the impact of magnetic field asymmetries and the presence of electric potentials on the formation of islands and stochastic regions, which can significantly influence plasma confinement. Central to the book's exploration is the utilization of field line tracing and guiding center orbit calculations to understand the intricate dynamics of electron transport. The author examines the conditions under which magnetic surfaces break down, leading to enhanced transport rates. The findings suggest that even small resonant terms in the electric potential can play a crucial role in explaining the anomalous electron transport observed in experiments. This book's insights into the complexities of plasma confinement in stellarators offer valuable contributions to the ongoing quest for controlled thermonuclear fusion, paving the way for advancements in this critical field of energy research. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
