Synopsis

Excerpt from The Arya Samaj: An Account of Its Origin, Doctrines, and Activities, With a Biographical Sketch of the Founder

I believe that this is the first book to be published in the United Kingdom dealing with what may possibly prove to be the most important religious movement in the whole of India. I have been very much impressed by what little I have seen of that movement, and I willingly respond to the request that I should give this book a few words of introduction.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a 19th-century Indian religious leader who founded the Arya Samaj, a reformist movement within Hinduism. The author, an Indian patriot and Arya Samaj leader himself, provides a detailed account of Dayananda's life and teachings, as well as the history and activities of the Arya Samaj. Dayananda was born in 1824 in Morvi, Gujarat, and was raised in a devout Hindu family. He was a brilliant student and quickly mastered the Vedas, the ancient scriptures of Hinduism. However, he was troubled by the contradictions and superstitions he found in the traditional Hindu religion, and he began to question the authority of the priests and Brahmins. In 1845, Dayananda left home to seek the truth. He wandered throughout India for many years, studying with different teachers and visiting holy places. He eventually settled in Benares, where he founded the Arya Samaj in 1875. The Arya Samaj was a reformist movement that sought to revive the original teachings of the Vedas. Dayananda rejected the authority of the Vedas but instead viewed the Vedas as the ultimate authority on religious and social matters. He also rejected the caste system, idol worship, and other traditional Hindu practices. Dayananda's teachings were controversial, and he faced opposition from both Hindus and Muslims. He was even accused of being a heretic and a traitor. However, he remained steadfast in his beliefs, and the Arya Samaj quickly grew in popularity. Today, the Arya Samaj is one of the largest and most influential reformist movements in Hinduism. It has branches all over the world, and its teachings continue to inspire people to seek the truth and to live a life of righteousness and compassion.
