Samuel (Lorens) Ödman (1750-1829) war schwedischer Theologe, Naturforscher, Kulturhistoriker, Verfasser theologischer Schriften und Gesangstexte. Er war Schüler des Naturwissenschaftlers Carl von Linné und veröffentlichte in den Jahren 1780-1793 neben seiner Arbeit als Pfarrer und später Schulmeister verschiedene naturwissenschaftliche Artikel, vor allem aus dem Bereich der Avifauna in den Schären. Durch eine schwere fiebrige Erkrankung und den daraus resultierenden Folgen verbrachte er einen Großteil seines weiteren Lebens im Bett (viele Abbildungen zeigen ihn in der Tat im Bett liegend und schreibend). Trotz dieser Einschränkung wurde er 1799 zum Professor für Theologie in seiner Wahlheimat Uppsala ernannt, wo er seit 1790 lebte. Er empfing Studenten und Gäste in einem Krankensaal bzw. einem Seminar- und Speiseraum. Neben eigenen Schriften wie den wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen, Kirchenhandbüchern, Kirchenliedern und Psalmen übersetzte er eine Vielzahl von Reisebücher und ethnographische sowie geographische Werke, was anhand seiner körperlichen Einschränkung eine große Leistung war.- Auch das vorliegende Büchlein (Reise durch Kamtschatka und Sibirien in den Jahren 1787 und 1788 so der deutsche Titel) von Jean Baptiste Barthélemy Baron de Lesseps (1766-1834) ist eine Übersetzung aus der Feder Ödmanns. Das Original, welches unter dem Titel Journal Historique du Voyage de Mr. Lesseps" im Jahr 1790 erschien, beruht auf den Reiseerfahrungen des Schriftstellers und Diplomaten de Lesseps, der als Dolmetscher den aufklärerischen Geograf und Seefahrer Jean-Francois de Galaup de Las Pérouse (1741-1788)auf ausgedehnten Reisen begleitete und so auch die Region Kamtschatka bereiste.- Ödmann übersetzte seine Bücher zum Teil nicht wortwörtlich, sondern nahm sich die Freiheit heraus, anthologisch bzw. aus anderen Werken zusammenstellend zu verfassen, er änderte, fügte hinzu oder ließ Dinge aus. Nach Raoul J. Granquist beschreibt er seine [also Ödmanns] Übersetzungsmethode in Bezug auf einen Meister, der sowohl den Text kontrolliert, den er übersetzt hat, als auch die Anpassung, der er sich seiner Meinung nach unterziehen muss, um einen neugierigen, aber unwissenden Leser zufrieden zu stellen." Durch diesen literarischen Weg erscheinen seine Reisebeschreibungen authentisch und schon fast biographisch, was natürlich aufgrund der Krankheit Ödmanns unmöglich war.- Das im Buch verzeichnete Druckdatum 1787 (auf eigene Kosten) kann nicht übereinstimmen mit dem tatsächlichen Erscheinungsdatum des Buches, da das ursprüngliche Buch erst 1790 erschien und die schwedische Ausgabe laut Bibliografie des Schwedischen Übersetzter Wörterbuch erst 1793 erschien (Verk för Samuel Ödmann - Svenskt översättarlexikon (litteraturbanken.se)). - Weitere Fotos finden Sie auf unserer Internetseite Riemberg Antiquariat. - Ecken und Kanten etwas berieben; schönes Exemplar.

This is the first Scandinavian publication relating to Cook's final voyage including the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. Produced as a cheaper alternative to the hefty 3-volume sets which appeared in German, Danish, French, and other languages, the present work was printed by the Royal press and gives a summary of the journey intended for a popular audience. Swedish interest in the expedition was elicited by the presence of the Swedish botanist and explorer Peter Forsskål in Niebuhr's caravan. After studying Arabic dialects, Forsskål was the first to scientifically describe many plants of the Arabian Peninsula, before dying in Yemen of malaria in 1763. - The plates, modeled after those of the German edition of 1772, depict a Turkish Pilgrim to Mecca; an Arab woman in a hijab, with an inset detail of a burkha; an Arab farm-girl from the 'Coffee Mountains' of southern Arabia; and an Arab nobleman of Yemen. - Binding rather rubbed; some chipping to spine; blank margin of first few leaves a little toned, otherwise a very good copy, clean and fresh. Tredje upplagan av ett av den svenska memoarlitteraturens klassiska arbeten. Den utgavs med anmärkningar av C. G. Rogberg. "Ett presthus." skrevs ursprungligen åt vännen E. M. Fant, då denne förlorade sin maka 1801. Manuskripet tillhörde Fant och hans släkting Rogberg gav ut det efter Ödmanns bortgång. Denna var annars känd för att inte vilja ge ifrån sig någon information om sig själv. Samuel Ödmann (1750-1829) är idag mest känd för sin botanik över Heliga Landet, sina översättningar och sammandrag av reseskildringar samt för att ha tillbringat större delen av sitt liv liggande till sängs.
