First Edition
Copertina morbida. Condition: Ottimo. Prima edizione. XLVII, 277 p. ; 24 x 17 cm.

Binding tight and secure with moderate rubbing to covers. First seventeenth leaves with marginal repairs, some just touching the text, title leaf with a couple of rust holes and old inking. Moderate toning throughout. Scarce. Notes: A rare and important edition of the "Malleus Maleficarum," one of the most infamous books in history which became known as the "Bible of witch-hunting". Originally compiled in the late 15th-century by Dominican inquisitors, the Malleus maleficarum (literally, the "hammer of witches") is perhaps the best known of the earliest treatises on witchcraft. The attribution of Sprenger as a co-author has been disputed. The first printed edition appeared in Strasbourg in 1486. "There can be no doubt that this work had in its day and for a full couple of centuries an enormous influence. The work was of course widely referred to throughout the European witch trials, and this particular edition was issued at a time when the witch-hunts in France, Germany, and Switzerland were still in full swing, and there is no doubt that copies of this printing helped seal the fate of many of the unfortunate accused. There are few demonologists and writers upon witchcraft who do not refer to its pages as an ultimate authority. It was continually quoted and appealed to in witch-trials" (Montague Summers). "It is universally considered as the greatest summa of printed demonological literature." (Mora, George (editor), Witches, Devils, and Doctors in the Renaissance, 1991, pp. 724-5). Norman Douglas described it as "the misogynists" handbook." Cf. Norman 1997; cf. Wellcome 6049. This edition was published in two volumes in 1600 and included not just the "Malleus Maleficarum" but also a collection of other significant demonological texts. The first volume [here offered for sale] comprises the "Malleus Maleficarum" itself, plus extracts from the "Formicarius" of Johannes Nider (originally the second book ever printed to discuss witchcraft). The second companion volume [which is here lacking] contains nine demonological treatises: Bernard Basin, "De artibus magicis ac magorum malificiis"; Ulrich Molitor, 'Dialogum de lamiis et pytonicis muliéribus"; Girolamo Menghi, "Flagellum Daemonum"; John Gerson, "De probatione Spirituum"; Thomas Murner, "De Pythonico contractu"; Foelicis Malleoli (Felix Hemmerlin) "Tractatus duos exorcismorum" & "De credulitate Daemonibus adhibenda"; Bartolomeo Spina, "De Strigibus feu Maleficis" & "Apologia quadruplici de Lamiis".

Augsburg, Anton Sorg, c. 24 May 1475, chancery folio (28,2 x 20,5 cm ) 305 leaves (complete, including the first blank leaf). 36 lines plus headline, some contemporary marginal annotations, large penwork initial D in red and green in contemporary hand. other capitals supplied in red. Printed on thick crisp paper. Very fine copy notwithstanding a few really tiny marginal wormholes at the first leaves, and some minimal thumbing. Binding: contemporary blindstamped German calf over wooden boards decorated with cross-shaped fillets and small fleurons. Ink-titled iece of vellum pasted on the front cover with the title ''Fra(ri)is Joha(n)nis Nider sup(er) Decalogium''. Raised spine decorated with fleurons. Brass ciselled clasps and catches. Upper joint partly cracked but holding. The book has been rebacked in a previous century, clasps have been renewed too. On the whole still a good contemporary binding. Provenance: With the manuscript ex-libris ''Maioris Ursinensis Bibliotheca'' (monastary of Irsee in the diocese of Augsburg). The abbey and its library was completely destroyed in the Thirty Years war. Printer: Anton Sorg started his carreer at the monastery press of SS. Ulrich and Afra where he presumably acquired the '104 Gotic text type' used to print this book. It is the second book of his press and the first Augsburg edition of Nider's text. Author: Joannes Nider was a Dominican theologist who became head of the Dominican convent at Basel in 1431. He was twice elected dean of Vienna University. He played an important role in the pacifying of the Bohemian Hussite heresy. This praeceptorium is his most frequently reprinted theological work (in the 15th c.) and deals with theological questions arising from the 10 Commandments. It was extensively used as a handbook for confessors and preachers. GW M226907. Goff N199.
