Add to basketHardback. Condition: Fine. Reprint. THE MINT A day-book of the R.A.F. Depot between August and December 1922 with later notes by 352087 A/c Ross T. E. Lawrence. Jonathan Cape, London 1955 reprint of the first open edition. 206pp Hardback. This copy is bound in blue cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and a stylised RAF eagle embossed to the upper board. The text block is unmarked, bright, white, tight and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is a trifle dusty commensurate with a sixty year old book, there is also a small closed tear to the rear panel it has now been covered in clear, removable, protective film. The Mint is a book written by T. E. Lawrence, 'Lawrence of Arabia', and published posthumously. It describes his time in the Royal Air Force, working, despite having held senior rank in the army (Colonel), as an ordinary Aircraftman, under an assumed name, 352087 Ross. The book is notable, despite flaws noted by critics, for its sharp observation, for the insight it gives into Lawrence himself, and for the censorship issues around its publication. Ref H 6.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. London: Jonathan Cape, 1955. 206pp. 4to. Blue cloth. Gilt lettering on spine. Very clean within. Includes good dust jacket. Very good. From the dust jacket: "When in 1922 T.E. Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hulme Ross, he was in a strange physical and mental state as the result of his war experiences. Upon the discovery of his identity he was discharged, but was allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the name of Shaw, under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. From his notes, many times re-written and revised, he constructed The Mint - 'an iron, rectangular, abhorrent book,' he called it, 'one which no man would willingly read.' It does not correspond to that description. In the main it is a highly subjective account of Lawrence's life in the R.A.F. Though resentfully critical of the treatment to which he and other recruits were subjected, it is not self-pitying. It is often robustly entertaining, and the character sketches are brilliant examples of Lawrence's literary skill. He had an acute ear for conversation: in fact, some of the dialogue so faithfully records habitual barrack-room words that it has been deemed inadvisable to reproduce them in the ordinary edition of the book.".

With an introduction by his brother, A. W. Lawrence. Limited edition of 2000 copies, this one marked "Presentation". Previous owner has noted "Presentation copy, formerly Marshall Sisson's; I bought this book from Blackwell's. on 23 October 1985.": claim not verified, but certainly reasonable, as the named architect once built a house for A. W. Lawrence, and also corresponded with Liddell Hart, Lawrence's biographer. (Clements pp. 38-39). This is the first English edition (limited issue - see O'Brien A172), published at approximately the same time (February, 1955) as the first English unlimited edition, and contains the partially expurgated text (by which is meant that 'objectionable' words have been omitted from the text, leaving blank spaces - the words were restored in the 1973 definitive edition).
