The work was originally published in 1935, with the revised second edition appearing in 1950. First Harper Torchbook edition, published in 1959 as part of the Science Library series, numbered TB 509. Attractive illustrated wrappers designed by Guy Fleming, with the original $1.95 price printed on the front cover. Volume II only; Volume I is not included. Condition: Good. Illustrated wrappers show moderate overall age and handling wear, including rubbing and small areas of surface loss along the spine and joints, edge and corner wear, light creasing, scattered spotting and soiling, and general toning. Spine ends are rubbed, with shallow chipping. Text-block edges are age-toned. Binding appears sound. Interior pages shown are clean with expected light toning; no ownership markings are visible in the photographed pages. Please review all photographs for the most accurate representation of condition. A useful scholarly reference for readers and collectors interested in the history of science, the Scientific Revolution, early modern technology, and the relationship between scientific discovery and philosophical thought. Published as part of the Harper Torchbooks Science Library, with Volume I designated TB 539 and Volume II TB 540. Both volumes retain their striking matching illustrated wrappers designed by Guy Fleming. The set is profusely illustrated, with 172 illustrations noted for Volume I and 173 illustrations for Volume II. Condition: Good. Both volumes show considerable exterior age and handling wear. Wrappers have overall toning, rubbing, scattered spotting and soiling, occasional staining, edge wear, and creasing. Corners are bumped, softened, and in places curled or chipped. Spine edges and ends are rubbed, with small areas of surface loss and short tears; the upper wrapper edges lift slightly in places. Text-block edges are noticeably age-toned. Interior pages shown are generally clean and legible with moderate toning. No ownership inscriptions or extensive markings are visible in the photographed pages. 'Abraham Simon Wolf Rosenbach (July 22, 1876 July 1, 1952) was an American collector, scholar, and seller of rare books and manuscripts. In London, where he frequently attended the auctions at Sotheby's, he was known as 'The… Terror of the Auction Room.' In Paris, he was called 'Le Napoléon des Livres', which translates to 'The Napoleon of Books.' Many others referred to him as 'Dr. R.', a 'Robber Baron' and 'the Greatest Bookdealer in the World'. Rosenbach is credited with popularizing the collecting of American literature at a time when only European literature was considered collectible. He also advanced the idea of book collecting as a means of investment and published several articles and books to increase interest in rare books and manuscripts. He bought and sold numerous items throughout his life, including eight Gutenberg Bibles, more than 30 Shakespeare's First Folios, a copy of the Bay Psalm Book and the manuscripts of Ulysses and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The lifetime total of his purchases is estimated to be worth more than $75,000,000 in 2019. . . .
