As he rarely did much observing himself anymore, he enlisted two young daguerreotypists, Hippolyte Fizeau and Le´on Foucault, to conduct the experiments for him.37 The two men, both school dropouts who seemed to have a knack for working with their hands, were very different from the well-trained savants Biot hoped would serve as the gatekeepers to the mysterious world of the photographic image. Their strategies for investing the photograph with reliability were equally different. The photometric work of Fizeau and Foucault was patterned on a set of experiments Arago had performed in the 1830s; but where he had used a visual photometer, they substituted silver plates. They were very explicit about their choice of the "daguerrian surface" over the other materials available: in the original manuscript Fizeau cited the "sharpness [nettete´] and visibility of the effect produced" as the deciding factor.38 Since they were using the plates to compare luminous sources, they wanted the process to be as much like visual observation as possible. They proceeded by forming an image of the luminous source in a chambre obscure. In this case, however, the term "chambre obscure" refers to a movable device that could be directed toward the object in question; it contained a lens that would form a geometrically precise representation."
