Manuscript / Paper Collectible
See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once. The valediction reads 'Yours alway faithfully / Arthur W. Pinero', and it is written with quite a flourish: the 'y' of 'faithfully' hooks downwards in a long squiggle, exrending downwards past the right of the termination of Pinero's signature, which rises upwards, being dotted above and below the signature's underlining. He feels that her 'kind letter is all the more welcome inasmuch as it gives signs' that she is recovering from her recent illness. 'We have indeed been greatly concerned at the bad news we have heard of you. I hope that the present fine weather will set you up completely.' He thanks her for what she says about his play 'The Thunderbolt': 'I fear it is rather too serious an affair for the taste of the ordinary playgoer; but we shall see.' He ends with 'repeated acknowledgments'.

See his appreciative entry in the Oxford DNB, concluding with praise of his 'undeniable' achievements.2pp, 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition; folded once for postage, and with the blank reverse of the first leaf laid down on part of a leaf from the autograph album of the novelist George Meredith's daughter Marie Eveleen ('Mariette'; 1871-1933), wife of Henry Parkman Sturgis (1847-1929), American-born banker and Liberal politician. Addressed to 'Miss Marie E. Meredith' and signed 'Arthur W. Pinero'. Begins: 'It is with a heavy heart that I tell you I am pledged, wit h Mrs. Pinero, to remain in town next Sunday'. Manuscript / Paper Collectible
3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with traces of paper from mount adhering to blank reverse of second leaf. Folded twice. From the Cullum papers, Simpson being a neighbour of the family. Having 'just come in from a longish walk', he is sorry to have missed Lady Cullum. He wishes he 'knew which of the two ways you name would be most agreeable to you, for us to dine with you; but since you kindly leave it to me, I say Friday, on which Evening we will have the pleasure of being at Hardwick at 7 o'Clock.' He reports that the 'two Miss Lockharts' are 'quite taken' with her, and 'loud in their praises of Lady Cullum'. He gives the names of the party he has 'made up' for the following Thursday: 'Herveys 3, Wynches 2, Col. Wollaston, and Mr. Barton - You and Miss Bird and ourselves make up the twelve.' He is 'not afraid of a Fox, well fed on good poultry, worrying Dot!' He does not think Dot can catch the fox, 'so believe he and Pater may try their best in great safety'. He ends with the remembrances of his two daughters to Lady Cullum and Miss Bird.
