Les deux journées d'études que l'équipe HISTARA (EA ????) de l'École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE-PSL) a consacrées à ces thématiques ont révélé un fort intérêt pour ces sujets de la part de disciplines aussi variées que l'histoire, l'histoire des arts, l'anthropologie ou la linguistique, ainsi qu'en témoigne la richesse des contributions de ce volume.
