Together with the exceptionally rare hand colored portrait of Henry Alken chemised in a red cloth portfolio, front flap lettered in gilt "Henry Alken/Suppressed Portrait/of/John Jorrocks/1843". On the verso of the plate written in pencil "Mr. Jorrocks at Home/Henry Alken/The suppressed Portrait of/John Jorrock. Esq M.S.H/by Henry Alken London 1843". "The Suzannet copy had an additional plate bound in as frontispiece viz. John Jorrocks Esqre. M.S.H. & c. A Citizen of Credit and Renown. Drawn and Etched by H. Alken. London Published by R. Ackermann at his Eclipse Sporting Gallery 191 Regent Street 1843. This plate was for some reason withdrawn and does not form part of the work." (Tooley, pp. 375-376). We have been able to locate just one example which had the "suppressed plate" (unsold at Alde's Auctions, Paris, in 2011. "Rare first edition of this famous book with the plates by Phiz (H.K. Browne). It first appeared, without illustrations, in the form of short stories distributed through Vol. I to Vol. VII of the "New Sporting Magazine." The stories were much altered before being issued in book form." (Schwerdt II, p.236). Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities first appeared in Volumes I-VII of New Sporting Magazine and then in book form in 1838 with twelve plates by Phiz, and again in 1839. Mellon/Podeschi 173.
