Jänner 2020. Künstlerpo…rträt: Wolfgang Paalen (geboren am 22. Juli 1905 in Wien; gestorben am 24. September 1959 in Taxco de Alarcón, Mexiko) war ein österreichisch-mexikanischer Maler, Bildhauer und Kunsttheoretiker. Nach seiner Mitgliedschaft in der Pariser Gruppe Abstraction-Création von 19341935 schloss er sich 1935 den Surrealisten um André Breton an und spielte in der Folge eine herausragende Rolle als Maler und Ideengeber. Während seines Exils in Mexiko ab 1939 gab er das Kunstmagazin Dyn heraus, mit dem er die unumschränkt subjektivistische, freudomarxistische Haltung des Surrealismus kritisierte und ihr eine umfassend begründete Philosophie der Kontingenz entgegenstellte. Während seines Aufenthalts in Paris von 1951 bis 1954 versöhnte er sich mit Breton und wirkte nochmals in dessen Kreis bis zu seiner Rückkehr nach Mexiko, wo er sich 1959 aufgrund seiner bipolaren Veranlagung das Leben nahm.
