Jänner 2020. Künstlerpo…rträt: Wolfgang Paalen (geboren am 22. Juli 1905 in Wien; gestorben am 24. September 1959 in Taxco de Alarcón, Mexiko) war ein österreichisch-mexikanischer Maler, Bildhauer und Kunsttheoretiker. Nach seiner Mitgliedschaft in der Pariser Gruppe Abstraction-Création von 19341935 schloss er sich 1935 den Surrealisten um André Breton an und spielte in der Folge eine herausragende Rolle als Maler und Ideengeber. Während seines Exils in Mexiko ab 1939 gab er das Kunstmagazin Dyn heraus, mit dem er die unumschränkt subjektivistische, freudomarxistische Haltung des Surrealismus kritisierte und ihr eine umfassend begründete Philosophie der Kontingenz entgegenstellte. Während seines Aufenthalts in Paris von 1951 bis 1954 versöhnte er sich mit Breton und wirkte nochmals in dessen Kreis bis zu seiner Rückkehr nach Mexiko, wo er sich 1959 aufgrund seiner bipolaren Veranlagung das Leben nahm. Neuware - Es war ein Leben voller Spannungen und unerwarteter Wendungen, das den Sohn eines österreichisch-jüdischen Kaufmanns aus dem Wien Kaiser Franz Josephs über Sagan, Rom und das Berlin der abgründigen Zwanziger Jahre schließlich in das Paris der Surrealisten führte. 1938 gelang Wolfgang Paalen mit se…inen Rauchbildern (Fumagen) und der Zusammenarbeit mit Marcel Duchamp bei der berühmten 'Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme' in Paris der Durchbruch. 1939 ging er auf Einladung Frida Kahlos ins Exil nach Mexiko und brachte seine Gedanken in einer Reihe explosiver Essays zu Papier, die er in der eigenen Zeitschrift DYN publizierte. Paalen leitete damit eine Revolution künstlerischen Denkens ein, mit der er zur geheimen Leitfigur der jungen amerikanischen Malerei der 1940er Jahre aufstieg. Obwohl er 1945 kurz nach Jackson Pollock in Peggy Guggenheims Galerie 'Art of the Century' in New York ausstellte, geriet er nach dem Durchbruch der Abstrakten Expressionisten in Vergessenheit. Der amerikanische Maler Robert Motherwell sprach 1991 von einer 'Verschwörung des Schweigens' bezüglich Paalens innovativer Rolle im New York der 1940er Jahre. Nach einem Intermezzo in Paris nahm er sich in Mexiko 1959 das Leben. In seiner minuziös recherchierten Biografie gelingt Andreas Neufert ein tiefer Einblick in ein übersehenes Kapitel der Moderne, das mit Paalens lebenslanger Passion für matriarchale Mythen und ihrem Einfluss auf die amerikanische Avantgarde der 1940er Jahre einen roten Faden erhält.
