Reprint der Aausgabe Leipzig: Barth 1911 Sehr gutes Ex. - Abu Bekr Muhammed Ibn Zakarija ar-Razi wird meist nach seiner Geburtsstadt Eaj in Chorasan (Persien) einfach in der latinisierten Form Razes, der Razier, genannt. Die von ihm verfaßte Autobiographie ist leider verloren gegangen; so wissen wir von seinem Leben nur sehr wenig. Da er im Jahre 923 oder nach anderer Überlieferung 932 n. Chr. in hohem Alter gestorben ist, so muß er um die Mitte des neunten Jahrhunderts geboren sein. Er erhielt eine gute philosophische, philologische und mathematische Ausbildung, beschäftigte sich aber in seiner Jugend hauptsächlich mit Musik, und zwar Gesang und Zitherspiel nicht ohne Erfolg. Nebenbei soll er Geldwechselgeschäfte betrieben haben. Erst mit 30 Jahren entschloß er sich Medizin zu studieren; ein Besuch des großen Hospitals in Bagdad soll so tiefen Eindruck auf ihn gemacht haben. Hier in Bagdad wurde Ibn Zein el-Tabari, ein zum Islam übergetretener jüdischer Arzt und Philosoph, sein Lehrer. Eazes erwarb sich großes Ansehen als geschickter Arzt und lebte als Direktor der Krankenhäuser erst in Raj, dann in Bagdad. Auch soll er große Reisen nach Palästina, Ägypten, ja nach Spanien unternommen haben, um sich auszubilden und mit den berühmtesten Ärzten seiner Zeit in Verbindung zu treten. Als Lehrer war er ebenso eifrig wie als Schriftsteller. Sein Lebensabend soll im Gegensatz zu seinen vorhergehenden Erfolgen trüb gewesen sein. Es wird erzählt, daß er dem Fürsten Al-Mansur, dem er schon ein medizinisches Werk gewidmet hatte, ein grundlegendes chemisches Handbuch habe überreichen wollen. Der Fürst beschenkte ihn zum Dank dafür mit 1000 Dinaren, verlangte aber, daß Eazes ihm einige in dem Buch angeführte chemische Experimente vormachen sollte. Als diese nicht gelangen, soll er ihn mit der Peitsche so über den Kopf in die Augen geschlagen haben, daß der unglückliche Verfasser nach einiger Zeit infolge von Star erblindete. Einem Operateur, der ihm den Star entfernen sollte, legte der gelehrte Arzt zuerst die Frage vor, wie viele Häute das Auge habe; als jener dies nicht wußte, erklärte Eazes: "Wer das nicht weiß, soll auch kein Instrument an meine Augen bringen." Auch späterhin lehnte er eine Operation ab mit der Begründung, er habe so viel von der Welt gesehen, daß er ihrer überdrüssig sei. Er starb, wie erwähnt, 923 oder 932, verarmt, da er in seiner Mildtätigkeit sein Geld an arme Kranke gegeben hatte. Schriftstellerisch war er außerordentlich tätig. Wir besitzen ein Verzeichnis von rund 200 Titeln von Büchern seiner Hand, die außer der Medizin verschiedene naturwissenschaftliche Gebiete (Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Astronomie) und Philosophie umfassen. Die Mehrzahl ist verloren gegangen, andere liegen nur in vereinzelten handschriftlichen Exemplaren in Bibliotheken, gedruckt sind nur wenige in den bekannten, wortgetreu und deshalb sinnentstellend ausgeführten, lateinischen Übersetzungen des Mittelalters. Eine Ausnahme macht nur die kleine Schrift über die Pocken und die Masern. Abgesehen von dieser sind die beiden Hauptwerke: 1. Der Continens (El-Hawi = der Behälter), eine das gesamte Gebiet der Medizin umfassende Sammlung von Exzerpten aus früheren Schriftstellern und von eigenen Beobachtungen des Verfassers, wahrscheinlich erst nach seinem Tode geordnet und deshalb sehr ungleichmäßig verarbeitet, zwei mächtige Folianten stark. 2. El-Mansuri, ein dem Fürsten El-Mansur gewidmetes Kompendium der Medizin in zehn Büchern, zusammen ein starker Foliant. Besondere Berühmtheit erlangte das neunte Buch, eine spezielle Therapie, die eines der verbreitetsten medizinischen Lehrbücher des Mittelalters war und als solches sehr häufig gedruckt und kommentiert wurde.
