Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. A composite collection of works dealing with sexuality, childbirth, medicine, astrology, and other subjects, comprising four works. Each work is preceded by a woodcut frontispiece, the first showing a woman, whose body is entirely covered by hair, and a black boy. The second has a scene showing midwives attending a woman who has just given birth. The third and fourth both show Aristotle (in contemporary dress) sitting in his study. The second work has a folding sheet showing the fetus' position in the womb. The first has small woodcuts showing conjoined twins and deformities. Bound in contemporary calf, rebacked, the boards ruled in gold (corners bumped, light wear to boards, very subtle repairs). The text is in very good condition, a bit shaken, slight rounding to the corners, a burn hole in one leaf, occ. dog-earing, some margins cut close, just touching the text in a few instances. In the "Master-Piece" there is a light stain in inner margin of leaf B8, a clean tear in the lower margin of leaf C2 (just entering the text, without loss), and a natural paper flaw in the corner of leaf C5. In the "Experienc'd Midwife", the folding leaf with the woodcut has a number of creases and folds, including one along the fold in the image (no loss). The same leaf has a long, closed tear, far from the image, with no loss. The headline of the leaf is slightly shaved. There is burn hole in one leaf (E9) with loss to a few words and a nickel-sized area of discoloration. In the "Book of Problems", there is a small hole in the upper margin (not affecting the text.) These treatises on pregnancy, childbirth, sexuality, folk science, and home medicine, trading on the name of Aristotle, appeared individually and then in collected editions throughout the 18th century, mostly in undated editions. Due to the alluring nature of some of the texts (the "Master-Piece" and "Legacy" had pornographic content) and the utilitarian function of the midwives' manual, all printings are uncommon and rarely found complete. Some of the collected editions also featured a general title page (not called for here). The first work in the volume, "Aristotle's Masterpiece", was an extraordinarily popular guide to sex and pregnancy, designed for the patients who could not afford professional medical care. Originally published in 1684, it was published and pirated into the 19th century. The frontispiece was one of very few erotic images available to the common reader. The "Master-Piece" "was the most popular book about women's bodies, sex, pregnancy, and childbirth in Britain and America from its first appearance in 1684 up to at least the 1870s. It was not written by Aristotle, it was assembled from a number of popular medical works . . . and is a bizarre assortment of superstition, folklore, and sex facts and fancies, all mixed in with the sort of common-sense medical advice that had been passed down by midwives for centuries."(Fissell, Mary E. "Hairy Women and Naked Truths", pp. 46-64) The second work in the volume is a childbirth manual covering the entire process from conception through pregnancy, labor, and birth. There are instructions for performing complicated deliveries, caring for newborn babies and older children, and contending with stillborn children. The folding plate shows the position of a baby in the womb. The third is a collection of pseudo-Aristotelian questions "How comes it that the heart is continually moving?, "Why do beasts move their ears and not man?", "Why are the lips moveable?", "Why do fish not make a sound?", "Why do madmen's arms become slender?", "Why have men not as great breasts as women?" The fourth is a work on human reproduction and women's sexual health, with detailed descriptions of genitalia, sexual intercourse, and venereal disease. Written for midwives, it is a re-arrangement of relevant chapters from the "Masterpiece". Chapters include "Of Virginity. its Signs and Tokens", "Of the Organs of Generation in Women", "Of the Use and Action of the Genitals", "Of Conception; and how a Woman may know whether she has conceiv'd", "Of Barrenness, with remedies against it", and "Directions to both Sexes how to manage themselves in the Act of Coition". All four works are discussed in more depth below. Bibliographical description of the other three books in the volume: Aristotle's compleat and experienc'd midwife. In two parts. I. Guide for child-bearing women, in the Time of their Conception, Bearing and Suckling their Children; with the best Means of Helping them, both in Natural and Unnatural Labours: Together with suitable Remedies for the various Indispositions of New-Born Infants. Aristotle's Masterpiece, also known as The Works of Aristotle, the Famous Philosopher, is a sex manual and a midwifery book that was popular in England from the early modern period through to the nineteenth century. It was first published in 1684 and written by an unknown author who falsely claimed to be Aristotle. As a consequence the author is now described as a Pseudo-Aristotle, the collective name for unidentified authors who masqueraded as Aristotle. Reputable publishers and booksellers might have been cautious about selling Aristotle's Masterpiece, at least in the wake of the 1857 Obscene Publications Act. Although many people in the twenty-first century might think of early modern readers as prudish, Aristotle's Masterpiece was not only a book on midwifery but also a sex manual. It therefore gave frank explanations of topics ranging from childbirth to "the purpose, pleasures, and particulars of sex." Also, unlike many later texts, it acknowledged women's sexual pleasure - something that people often downplayed in later centuries after male midwives rose in popularity and open conversations about sex became less common. Sammelband of original 18th century versions of Aristotle's Masterpiece. First printed in London in 1684, it was imported to the American colonies and then became a staple of early publishing in the United States, going into hundreds of editions. Contemporary limp vellum with four later leather straps. All edges red but faded. Rare Spanish edition of one of the most widely read texts of the High Middle Ages - the pseudo-Aristotelian "Secret of Secrets", purportedly a letter from Aristotle to his student Alexander the Great on an encyclopedic range of topics, including statecraft, ethics, physiognomy, astrology, alchemy, magic, and medicine, supposedly based on a tenth-century Arabic text. The present edition is one of only seven works attributable to the printer Andrés de Burgos, only briefly active in Burgos between May 1503 and June 1505. - Modern scholarship assumes the text to date from after the Encyclopedia of the Brethren of Purity and before the work of Ibn Juljul in the late tenth century. The section on physiognomy may have circulated as early as AD 940. The Arabic text was translated into Persian (at least twice), Ottoman Turkish (twice), Hebrew, Spanish, and twice into Latin. The Hebrew edition also formed the basis for a translation into Russian. The first partial Latin version was prepared for the Queen of Portugal in ca. 1120 by the converso John of Seville; it is now preserved in about 150 copies under the title "Epistola Aristotelis ad Alexandrum de regimine sanitatis" ("Aristotle's letter to Alexander on good health"). The present second translation, and the first of the whole work, was done at Antioch ca. 1232 by the canon Philip of Tripoli for Bishop Guy of Tripoli. - II: First edition of Jacob Köbel's famous treatise on the astrolabe, including a full-page woodcut of a muse holding the sphere of the universe on the reverse of the title-page. Essentially an instruction on the use of the astrolabe, it demonstrates how to calculate time, location, and hours, including various explanatory diagrams and charming illustrations. - III: Rare Venice edition of one of the most influential works of pre-Copernican astronomy in Europe, Johannes de Sacrobosco's "De Sphaera Mundi" from ca. 1230, which introduced the fundamental elements of astronomy. Drawing heavily on Ptolemy's Almagest and Arabian astronomical concepts, it was one of Europe's most influential works on astronomy before Copernicus. The first edition was printed in Ferrara in 1472, and over 90 editions were published in the following two centuries. - IV: An anonymously composed Latin manuscript on astronomy, geometry, trigonometry and arithmetics, drawing on the works of Bohemian astronomer Christian of Prachatice (ca. 1360-1439) and Johannes von Gmunden (ca. 1380-1442), founder of the Vienna School of Astronomy, as well as other scholars. The text elaborates on astronomical calculations and the use of the astrolabe, including some trigonometric sketches for measuring height and angles. Prepared by at least three hands, the manuscript forms two distinct parts (the first comprising 44 pp., the second one 56 pp.) with Sacrobosco and Aristotle bound in between. - Binding somewhat spotted, chipped and frayed. - I: A7 has two burn holes, one repaired, causing some text loss. Marginal manuscript annotations throughout. - II: Small marginal tears to title-page, A2 and A3. Some waterstaining. - III: Lacks title-page (supplied in facsimile). - Some more waterstaining to final manuscript section. - I: Cranz 107.722. Norton 315. Palau I, 114. - II: VD 16, K 1591. Hardcover. Condition: NEAR FINE. lxxxvii, 903pp. B/W facsimile frontispiece. Thick 8vo, sewn binding in black cloth with gilt stamped lettering. Some very trivial shelfwear and spine just faintly faded, exceedingly clean and sharp otherwise with tight binding. Out of print with the publisher, though Brill will sell you a pdf for $475, and quite scarce in trade. 'A first edition of the Arabic text and the Hebrew text of the Problemata Physica, ascribed to Aristotle, which has been elaborated in later Antiquity in Greek. The text, corresponding with the first 15 books of the existing Greek text, contains chiefly medical problems, but also biological and mathematical ones. Therefore this volume deals with a comparison of the existing Greek text and the lost extended Greek version, only transmitted in this Arabic translation and in this Hebrew translation of the Arabic version. The authorship of the famous translator Hunain Ibn Ishaq has been discussed. The role of the Problemata Physica in Arabic literature has not been omitted. Interesting for Semitic linguistics is the description of the language used by ?unain ibn Ish?q and Moses ibn Tibbon, and of the influence of Arabic on the Hebrew of the translators. Glossaries have been added to give the reader the opportunity to compare the Arabic text with the Greek and the Hebrew ones.' (Publisher's blurb).…

Add to basketCondition: ESTC T83421. 18mo. 3.5 x 5.75 inches. 166 pp. Bound in recent half mottled morocco over marbled boards with new endpapers; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt lines, gilt title. A well used copy with light foxing. A title, with a traditional attribution to Aristotle, but not in fact by him, first published in translation in 1595, although ESTC records no copies earlier than the twenty fifth edition of c. 1710. This copy does not include the often separately published Aristotle's Last Legacy. Antonius Zimaras, author of the second section, was active in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This work, written in the form of a catechism, is in essence a medical manual with a particular emphasis on sexual matters ('Of carnal copulation') and this may explain the somewhat furtive manner of its publication with no named publisher. Certainly it must have filled a need, being published in over thirty editions throughout the century. NATURAL HISTORY/SCIENCE MEDICINE MEDICINE NATURAL HISTORY 18TH CENTURY NATURAL HISTORY/SCIENCE.…

Add to basketFirst edition of one of the earliest printed books about colour, translated from the Greek into Latin and with commentary by the Neapolitan physician and philosopher Simone Porzio (1497-1554). Usually attributed to Aristotle, it is now thought to be the work of the peripatetic scholar and pupil of Aristotle, Theophrastus.''As the author states at the end of the treatise, it is intended rather to supply data for a detailed examination into the scientific theory of colour than to expound a complete thesis. He has realized that the development of colour in animals and plants depends to some extent on heat, and he seems to suggest that heat and moisture are the controlling factors. It is of more value as a collection of observed facts than for any theory of the origin and development of colour in physical life'' (Aristotle, Minor Works, Cambridge and London, Loeb Classical Library, 1936, p. 3).With some spotting on the title-page and some marginal tears, not approaching the text, but otherwise in very good condition and with large margins. Binding with the sewing supports broken, a tear in the backstrip and some small stains. An important treatise on colour and one of the earliest.l Adams P1958; Caillet 8881; EDIT16, CNCE 16133; Hoffman I, 289 ("rare and very important"); Kemp, The science of art, p. 264; Schwab, Bibliographie d'Aristotle 3503; USTC 803281.
