Dezember 1822 in Laleham, Middlesex; 15. Aus seinen Vorträgen gingen die Bücher On Translating Homer (1861, 1862) und On the Study of Celtic Literature (1867) hervor. Bereits in seiner Antrittsvorlesung nahm er sich die literarische "Modernität" zum Thema. . (wiki) // THIS is the companion volume to a new edition of the complete Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold, to be published, it is hoped, in 1941. The book requires the use of an edition (such, for example, as the 'Globe'), in which the poems are arranged'in the order in which Arnold left them. The reader will find many passages-and even single lines -here discussed in some detail, though space could not be spared to print the text of the poem of which they are a part; moreover the notes provided by the poet himself (who was fond of annotating his work) are not here reprinted, since they will be included in the forthcoming volumes, together with his prefaces and appendices. In discussing the various poems no attempt has been made to achieve uniformity of treatment, save for a certain general procedure which will be obvious to the reader. The commentaries naturally vary in length, as well as in interest and importance. Disappointingly little has been discovered as to the exact date of composition of many of Arnold's poems; what might be learned, therefore, from an exact chronology of the poems, we are unable to provide. Nor have we attempted to produce a 'handbook' with full annotation of matters which may be settled by easy recourse to books of reference. The plan of the present treatise came into being when the discovery of what is here called the Yale Manuscript disclosed a large amount of new information regarding Arnold's development as a poet. We have been privileged to use, as well, a considerable store of other unpublished papers, and of books left in Arnold's library. . (Vorwort) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Hand Written and Signed Letter by Poet Matthew Arnold to Henry James Maine. Letter undated. A handwritten and signed letter by the writer Matthew Arnold to Maine thanking him for his help in passing over notes to the committee and other contrite chores. Matthew Arnold 1822 - 1888 was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, the celebrated headmaster of Rugby School, and brother to both Tom Arnold, literary professor, and William Delafield Arnold, novelist and colonial administrator. Matthew Arnold has been characterised as a sage writer, a type of writer who chastises and instructs the reader on contemporary social issues. He was also an inspector of schools for thirty-five years, and supported the concept of state-regulated secondary education. Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822-1888, was a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. He is famous for the thesis outlined in his book Ancient Law that law and society developed "from status to contract." According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Because of this thesis, Maine can be seen as one of the forefathers of modern legal anthropology, legal history and sociology of law. Size 180mm x 115mm Condition is good. Light folding creases. Gum marks to rear. More images can be taken upon request. Ref17705. Signed by Author(s).

Paper. Condition: Good. First Edition. An Original Hand Written and Signed Letter by Matthew Arnold. Letter dated 1885. A handwritten and signed letter by the writer Matthew Arnold on his work as a schools inspector and his book 'Popular Education in France'. 'Dear Sir, It is now many years since I saw the schools of the Christian Brothers. They are not to be compared with the Realschulen of Germany, for all that I saw were schools for the people, Volkschulen. What I thought of them you will find in my report on "Popular Education in France", which will probably, either in the form of a Bluebook, or in the form of a volume published by Messrs Longman, be found in the public libraries of Birmingham. Believe me, with many thanks for your kind expressions, Your faithful servant, Matthew Arnold' Matthew Arnold 1822 - 1888 was an English poet and cultural critic who worked as an inspector of schools. Mild rubbing to spine ends, corners lightly bumped, some faint staining to rear board, closed tear to half-title, with tiny archival tape reinforcement on verso. He published an essay on Arnold in his book Tennyson, Ruskin, Mill, and Other Literary Estimates (London, 1899).

Philip Larkin's personal copy of the collected poems of Matthew Arnold. A reprint of the September 1890 'first complete edition'. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Portrait frontispiece. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and with a few small marks. The contents, with Philip Larkin's tipped in University of Hull 'private collection' bookplate to the front endpaper (the endpaper clipped at the upper corner), a small paper Dublin bookseller's label to the front and rear pastedowns, some pencilled notes to the rear pastedown with corresponding pencil marks to the margins of the poems to which they refer, and some spotting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout. From the personal collection of Philip Larkin with his signed 'personal collection' University of Hull library bookplate tipped in at the front endpaper. A pleasing, poetic association copy. In a letter dated 23rd June 1941 to his childhood friend (and later the dedicatee of 'Jill'), James Ballard Sutton, Larkin writes ". After all, poetry is a thing depending almost entirely on words. There are Shites, of course, who think it does (first stage fuckers) and spend all their time (Maugham!!!) juggling with 'richly brocaded' words. These men are shit-pans, comepots and toss-bottles. Then you get the intellectual fuckers (M. Arnold) who say 'Poetry is written with ideas'. Their obstreperous failures cover pages of literary history". (Twaite, Anthony edits: Selected Letters of Philip Larkin, p.17) Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Hardcover in original half-leather boards with Florentined paper including similar pattern on all text-block edges. Inked letter from Arnold, SIGNED and dated Sept. 15th, no year stated, from Laleham, Surrey, affixed at front of book. The letter reads, "Dear Sir, I think that Macmillan have a printed list of my publications, with dates. My first published work was 'The Strayed Reveller,' brought out by [Feldman] in 1847 without the author's name. Faithfully yours, Matthew Arnold." From the library of James Fraser Gluck, with his bookplate affixed to inside front board. Gluck, lone-time curator of the Buffalo (NY) Library and later its director, made a collection of manuscripts and autograph letters of famous men, historical documents of value and rare books (including Mark Twain's original handwritten manuscript of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn). Just before the close of his term of office in the late 1890s he presented his collection to the library, perhaps the most valuable of the kind in the country. Front board is completely detached. Leather spine covering with title in gilt is intact but unglued. Interior pages are fresh and bright. 8vo. 330 pp.
