First published three times in 1749; in octavo (Lousiana only), another octavo issue with a variant imprint and the title printed in red and black (5 copies), and also a slim 16pp quarto edition (10 copies). In February of 1748, a customs official named William Galley was escorting a witness called Daniel Chater from Southampton to Chichester to testify against a gang of smugglers who had broken into the customs house at Poole earlier that year. The pair stopped at The White Hart in Rowlands Castle for refreshment before the final leg of their journey. Unfortunately for them, the inn was a regular meeting point for members of the Hawkhurst Gang; the very smugglers whom the witness was to testify against. Once aware of the mission of the two men, the smugglers plied them with drink and spirited them away into the night. Galley's body was later found inside an enlarged foxhole at Harting Coombe. His arms were raised upwards as if shielding himself from being buried alive. Chater was discovered at the bottom of a well in Lady Holt Park, his body crushed by debris that had been pelted down on him. Both men had been cruelly tortured. The hunt for their killers began in earnest and the village of Rowlands Castle became the centre of a criminal investigation that shocked the nation. The first edition of this account appeared immediately after the trial of the Hawkhurst Gang leaders in 1749. The case was sensational for its time, no doubt helped by the series of illustrated pamphlets written by the anonymous 'gentleman of Chichester' (widely believed to have been the Duke of Richmond). The sadistic violence of the smugglers shocked the public and dispelled the belief that smuggling was a harmless crime.

Der Deal wurde nicht abgeschlossen, und die Bücher wurden in den nächsten Jahren stückweise für insgesamt 228.000 Pfund verkauft. Two pages, 12mo, chipped and with small closed tears, with loss of half a line of text and some letters, bottom edge turned up, aging. "I beg to offer you according to your reque[st] a list of books printed by Caxton, in the library at Ashburnham House with their imperfections and sizes. | I have taken the liber[ty] to send also such not[es] [half line lost] will I thi[nk] apply to the particular copies under description[.] Certainty is often difficult to arrive at, and should your lordship incline to favour me with any corrections or emendations in the accompanying notes, they will be greatly esteemed and carefully noted by . . . ". WITH: The notes in Blades' hand referred to in this letter, 3pp., 12mo, bifolium, chipped, sunned and turned edges, etc, minor losses, signed "William Blades | 21/4/58", commencing, "The Book of divers ghost[ly matters printed by Caxton in 4to consists of three separate tracts meant evidently to be bound in one volume, but with the signatures arranged . . . " He goes on to list the three titles, and then lists the libraries which hold them (Cambridge Public Library, Althorpe, Ham House, Durham, giving information about the copies, including condition and sale price. He adds that there is a copy for sale, 2nd tract only, in perfect condition and modern binding. He concludes that "The above are the only copies I have seen."
