Two works of the Athenian born historian, philosopher and soldier, Xenophon (c.430-354 BC). The first is Cyropaedia, a fictional version of the upbringing of Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Empire, in which the author outlines his political and moral philosophy. Xenophon himself led the Ten Thousand Greek mercenaries in campaigns to support Cyrus the Younger in his claim to the Persian throne. Xenophon was a student and follower of Socrates and the second volume presents his Commentaries on Socrates. Friedrich August Bornemann (1788-1848) was a German philologist, schoolteacher, specialising in the study of Xenophon and the Greek New Testament.
