The spine is separated into six compartments by the raised sewing supports, each of which, aside from that bearing the citron morocco label, is decorated with… attractive floral tools. The large gilt armorial crest consisting of a Pegasus head and wings "LTHD" on upper cover, earl's coronet and "EDDE" on lower cover. The edges of the text block are stained a solid red. The binding is in exceptional condition, with only the slightest bit of wear. The text itself is in excellent condition. The text of the poem is set in Black Letter and is adorned with attractive woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces throughout. Creede's woodcut printer's device appears on the title page. Excellent. Provenance: Tollemache, Earls of Dysart, Helmingham (supralibros, engraved armorial bookplate on title verso, note on front pastedown in hand of Lionel Tollemache, fourth Earl). This is the fourth complete printing (first 1584) of the first complete English translation of Virgil's "Aeneid", translated by Thomas Phaer (c. 1510-1560), who was responsible for the first nine books, and Thomas Twyne (c.1500-1581), who translated the final three after Phaer's death. The Phaer-Twyne translation was preceded by Gavin Douglas' version in Scots (1553) and a fragmentary verse translation (books 2 and 4) by Henry Howard, Duke of Surrey (1557). "The complete translation of the 'Aeneid' by Thomas Phaer and Thomas Twyne has every reason to be considered the central English Renaissance 'Aeneid.' The publication history tells the story succinctly. Whereas no other translation of Virgil was printed in England more than twice until the 1650s (and only the Earl of Surrey's translation of Book 4 was printed more than once in England during this time), the translation by Phaer and Twyne went through eight editions, running from 1558 through to 1620. It influenced the translations by Richard Stanyhurst (1582), Sir John Harington (1604) and Sir Thomas Wroth (1620), and it was still one of the most important subtexts for John Vicars' 'The XII Aeneids of Virgil' (1632). Much as the translation by Annibale Caro came to dominate the market for Virgil in Italian, the Phaer-Twyne 'Aeneid' became the English standard. It was not until the eighteenth century that any English translation of Virgil's epic went through more editions. "That this translation would become so successful would have been difficult to predict from its inauspicious beginnings. The initial translator, Thomas Phaer, was a physician and solicitor in the Marches of Wales. He published nothing else in verse and would have made an unlikely candidate for a great interpreter of Virgil. Nevertheless, in 1555 he began work, hoping to be the first to 'sette open' the gate so that future translators could follow. Although Phaer seems to have been aware of both the Middle Scots translation by Gavin Douglas and the two books by the Earl of Surrey, he presented his version of the Aeneid as the start of a new line of translations. By December 1557, Phaer had completed a version of Books 1-7. He had these printed in 1558. By April 1560, he had completed up to the end of Book 9. But late in that spring, he suffered a riding accident that ruined his hand and would soon cost him his life. "Before his death on 12 August, he sent all that he had finished of his translation - which was then up to line 286 of Book 10 - to William Wightman, a friend of his in Pembrokeshire. This friend fervently believed in Phaer's literary gifts and, after Phaer had passed away, he searched the deceased's house for any trace of remaining verses. But there was none to be found. In 1562, Wightman resigned himself to publishing what he had of Phaer's Virgil, hoping that another author might complete the project. Just over a decade later, the work was taken up by Thomas Twyne, who was a physician in London. Containing accounts of five voyages made by the Dutch to the East Indies to counteract the influence of the Portuguese and Spaniards who had sought to establish themselves there. The first is an account of the second voyage of Jacob van Neck to the East Indies, from 1600-1604, during which he visited the islands of Ternate and Macao, and the city of Patane, in which he lost three fingers in a sea battle with a Spanish-Portuguese fleet near Ternate. "This made him decide that he had stretched his luck far enough and that he had better stay home" (Masselman page 116). The narrative of this voyage was written by Roelof Roelofsz and was translated by Artus for both the German and Latin editions of De Bry. The second is Jan Harmensz Bree's account of the voyage to the East Indies in 1602-1604, under the command of Admirals Sebald De Weert and Pietersz to Ceylon, where de Weert met his death at the hands of the Maharajah of Kandy. The third is a short account by Cornelis Clæsz of that part of the expedition which detached itself from the main fleet, under the command of Corneille Nicolas, and visited China. The fourth is the first published account of the voyage of two vessels under the command of Wibrandt van Warwijck to Bantam, east Java, Borneo, and on to China. And the fifth is an account of the second voyage of Steven van der Hagen to the islands of the Moluccas in 1603-1606, which was first published in Rotterdam in 1606. Sion College was founded by the bequest of the wealthy Thomas White (1550-1624), who also built a hospital in Temple in Bristol, provided scholarships to Magdalen Hall, funded a lectureship at St Paul's in London, bequeathed his folio and Latin books to St George's Chapel, Windsor, and donated to the city of Bristol money for the improvement of roads and other municipal purposes. The library grew with the help of many small donors including Matthew Forster's gift in 1646 of Caxton's first book "The Recuyell of the Histories of Troye", printed at Bruges in 1474-75. Another early bequest was from the library of Walter Travers (1548? - 1635), puritan divine which included a Mercator Atlas. Benzoni's account of his fifteen years of travel in the Isthmus of Panama and Guatemala first published in Venice in 1565: "It was [written] at the time when the controversy concerning the treatment of the Indians was hottest, and a work, written by one who had just returned from the New World after a stay of fifteen years could not fail to attract attention. In writing it, no standard of criticism was applied; this was not in the spirit of the times. The ultra-philanthropists found Benzoni a welcome auxiliary, and foreign nations, all more or less leagued against Spain for the sake of supplanting its mastery of the Indies, eagerly adopted his extreme statements and sweeping accusations" (Catholic Encyclopedia). Sion College was founded by the bequest of the wealthy Thomas White (1550-1624), who also built a hospital in Temple in Bristol, provided scholarships to Magdalen Hall, funded a lectureship at St Paul's in London, bequeathed his folio and Latin books to St George's Chapel, Windsor, and donated to the city of Bristol money for the improvement of roads and other municipal purposes. The library grew with the help of many small donors including Matthew Forster's gift in 1646 of Caxton's first book "The Recuyell of the Histories of Troye", printed at Bruges in 1474-75. Another early bequest was from the library of Walter Travers (1548? - 1635), puritan divine which included a Mercator Atlas. Devoted to the Near and Far East, China and the activities of the Dutch in Asia, and including illustrations of naval warfare, monkey-like beasts offering tokens of Christianity to native chiefs, Chinese people making offerings to their gods, and worshiping devilish beasts. Inspired by a meeting with the celebrated Richard Hakluyt in London in 1587, de Bry published the first of his own collection of voyages relating to the Americas in 1590: Hariot's account of Virginia. In order to maximize profit he had editions published in English, Latin, French and German. He went on to publish five further parts before his death in 1598, when his sons Johann Theodor and Johann Israel took over the task of completing the "Great Voyages" and began the "Small Voyages", an oeuvre which eventually stretched to 25 volumes published over forty-five years. "America pars quinta": (bound without text leaves and portrait of Columbus) engraved title-page, 22 half-page engraved vignettes (without repeated title-page and original blank, oxidized throughout). 18th-century blind panelled sheep with central arabesque medallion to an earlier style (quite worn with minor loss to the extremities). Provenance: inscribed at length on the paste-down of each volume by "A.V.D.S." and dated 1740; modern etched bookplates on verso of title-pages. White's "images of Native Americans in the late sixteenth century were exceptional for his era and unsurpassed as a visual record of south-eastern tribal life until the advent of photography" (Tiro). Second edition, second issue of "Admiranda narratio fida tamen" (Church 143) or Thomas Harriot's "A Brief and True Report of the New Found land of Virginia" first published in London in 1588. With a fine copy of de Bry's celebrated map "Americae pars, Nunc Virginia dicta": "Theodore de Bry's map of Virginia, after John White, is one of the most significant cartographical milestones in colonial North American history. It is the most accurate map drawn in the sixteenth century of any part of that continent. It became the prototype of the area until long after James Moxon's map in 1671. this is the first map to focus on Virginia (now largely North Carolina), and records the first English attempts at colonisation in the New World" (Burden). Harriot was employed "'at a most liberal salary' by the queen's favourite, Sir Walter Ralegh (c.1552-1618), to teach Ralegh and his sea captains at Durham House in London the sciences of navigation, and to serve him in various other capacities, in preparation for Ralegh's first enterprise to establish a settlement in America. Harriot-but not Ralegh-was a member of the short-lived colony which landed on Roanoke Island, Virginia, in June 1585 and returned to England with Sir Francis Drake in June 1586. Before the voyage Harriot had studied the local language from two Algonquian Indians who had been taken to England in 1584 by a reconnaissance expedition. He even invented a phonetic alphabet to represent the language, and used his knowledge in Virginia to study local social and religious customs, together with plants, animals, and produce. Harriot published a summary of his survey, largely to defend Ralegh's enterprise, as a pamphlet in 1588 entitled "A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia". At a time of brutal violence between colonists and native inhabitants the text is remarkable for its sympathy towards Algonquian beliefs and customs. It also contains what may be the first printed promotional literature in English for tobacco by an English writer, and Harriot and Ralegh were subsequently credited with the introduction of pipe tobacco smoking into England from Virginia" (J.
