Lacks portrait of Bartlett, but includes a portrait of Willis in Volume II. A total of 121 plates including portrait and title-page vignettes, all but the map hand-coloured. Inner endpaper hinges cracked but firm and usable. Some slight toning internally, but, in general, very bright and clean. Otherwise a clean, tight and unmarked set. Vor jedem Stahlstich ein transparentes Schutzpapier. Vor den deutschen Titeln jeweils ein illustriertes Titelblatt in Englisch: "Switzerland by William Beattie, M.D. Illustrated in a series of views taken on the spot and expressly for this work by W. H. Bartlett, Esq." Die englischen Titelblätter geben das Erscheinungsjahr 1839 an. Reich ornamentierter Leder-Rücken mit Titel-Golddruck; geprägter bzw. gemusterter Deckelbezug im biedermeierlichen Stil. Erhaltung: Alle 106 Stahlstiche sind vollzählig. Die meisten Tafeln mit Braunflecken, aber überwiegend an den unbedruckten Rändern. Durchgehend auch Fingerflecken an den Ecken rechts-unten. Die Ausfaltkarte mit einem Einriss. Ritratto dell'autrice in antiporta, frontespizio con vignetta e titoli in inglese, 78 tavole fuoti testo di vedute e monumenti, incise in acciaio, una carta geografica alla fine. Prima edizione col testo francese, pubblicata lo stesso anno dell'originale inglese. Tracce del tempo ai piatti; leggera brunitura della carta, ma bell'esemplare. Julia PARDOE (1806 - 1862) è stata una poetessa, narratrice e storica inglese. Tra le prime donne a descrivere la Turchia, dove viaggiò col padre, il comandante Thomas Pardoe, nel 1836.

Due frontespizi incisi con grande vignetta e le 106 belle tavole fuori testo incise in acciaio dal Bartlett; alla fine del secondo volume una carta geografica ripiegata. Belle legature in piena pelle con titoli filetti e fregi in oro al dorso, piatti incorniciati da filetto in oro e interamente goffrati con decorazione liberty; tagli dorati a specchio. Piccole spellature ai margini delle legature, per il resto ottimo esemplare, fresco e in bella legatura, di questa splendida opera in prima edizione.

Spines richly gilt and with a gilt border on covers. All edges gilt. A small nick to one corner, otherwise in very fine condition. 2 engraved titles and 2 printed. VI,(2),192(4),136 pp. and 106 (57+49) fine steel-engraved plates drawn by Bartlett with different engravers. 1 large folded map. All plates with protective tissue guards. A few plates with light offsetting, otherwise fine and clean throughout. Text in French. First French edition in a very attractive embossed binding, signed.
