Paperback. Condition: Good. 1st. (GER) Presued 1st edition, Owner's inscription to half title, small crease to corner of cover, touch of waviness to portion of top margin of pages, thus Good used copy. Wraps, 170pp, B&W reproductions of exquisite portraits made with large format cameras, augmented with B&W photos and illus. Hiroshi Sugimoto photographs wax figures of Henry VIII and his wives. These wax figures are based on portraits from the 16th century and when taking the picture Sugimoto attempts to recreate the lighting that would have been used by the painter. Focusing on Madame Tussaud's in London, its branch in Amsterdam and a wax museum in Ito, Japan, Sugimoto took three-quarter view photos, using 8-by-10-inch negatives, of the most realistic wax figures. They are typically taken against a black background. There is a fold-out of a recreation of the Last Supper. The text is entirely in German. (3.3 JM LVR 200/1 Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12". paperback. Condition: Very Good. DETAILS: tall sewn PAPERBACK, separate translucent green dust-jacket is wrinkly and wavy but the green covers and book are in near fine condition. BASHKOFF, TRACEY, (organizer). . On the sublime: Mark Rothko, Yves Klein, James Turrell. Organized by Tracey Bashkoff. Berlin : New York: Deutsche Guggenheim ; Guggenheim Museum Publications, 2001, 135pp., . Rothko, Mark, 1903-1970; Bashkoff, Tracey R.; Klein, Yves, 1928-1972; Turrell, James - Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, July 7-Oct. 7, 2001 - On the Sublime accompanied a small exhibition of minimalist works by Mark Rothko, Yves Klein and James Turrell. The exhibit included color-field paintings and light installations that are quietly captivating, and we tried to evoke the same spirit in this simple book. The cover is delicate and evanescent; pages are thick and sober; transparent tints separate chapters; and the typography is (we hope) both retiring and monumental. - CONTENTS: Rothko's sublimities / Robert Rosenblum -- Yves Klein and the double-edged sublime / Thomas McEvilley -- James Turrell and the nonvicarious sublime / Frances Richard. 9780892072477 ISBN 0892072474.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Twenty-first-century Kandinsky: a reappraisal of the Russian abstractionists art, life and thought through the extraordinary collection of the iconic museumOne of the foremost artistic innovators of abstraction in the 20th century, Vasily Kandinsky sought to liberate painting from its ties to the natural world and promote the spiritual in art. This richly illustrated publication looks at Kandinsky anew, through a critical lens, reframing our understanding of this vital figure of European modernism, who was also a prolific aesthetic theorist and writer.A series of thematic essays considers his engagement with avant-garde artistic communities including the Bauhaus, his relationship to improvisation and music, his travels in Europe and Russia, and the influences behind his self-declared anarchist mode of abstraction, among other topics. Tracing Kandinskys life and work through his years in Moscow, several cities in Germany, and Paris, the texts offer striking new insights into an artist whose creative production and style were intimately tied to a sense of placeand displacementand evolved amid the political and social upheavals catalyzed by the Russian Revolution and World Wars I and II.Kandinskys history is closely linked to that of the Guggenheim Museum. Solomon R. Guggenheim began collecting the artists work in 1929; a year later, they met at the Bauhaus, in Dessau. This book features more than half of the museums deep holdings of works by Kandinsky, presenting the full arc of his artistic development and career. Included are paintings in oil and oil with sand, reverse-glass paintings, as well as woodcuts, watercolors and drawings on paper. An illustrated chronicle of Kandinskys life and career, including selected exhibitions and publications, rounds out the volume. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
