An attractive example, in an unusual contemporary morocco binding of The Book of Common Prayer, the third and last octavo edition from the press of the acclaimed type-founder John Baskerville (1707-1775). Abijah Mellor was a jeweller and silversmith, who established his business in Derby in 1750, being the first to set up such an industry in the town. His output was apparently deemed superior to any other such establishment in the country, with the exception only of London manufacturers, and at one time he had 300 men in his employ. 'Baskerville was one of the giants of English typography, introducing a number of innovations, including the eponymous typeface still in use today. His typefaces were finely constructed, his designs simple, and spare, and made great use of white space. He also pioneered the development of fine papers for printing' (Society of Archbishop Justus). Gaskell 19.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. The Works of Mr. William Congreve Consisting of his Plays and Poems Birmingham. Printed by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, in the Strand, London. MDCCLXI [1761] 3 volumes. All three volumes bound in a recent quarter-leather binding. Light brown leather spine with raised cords, spine labels in maroon and darker brown with gold lettering. Marbled paper over boards. Marbled endpapers. Page edges gilt. Bookplates on the inside front covers of all three volume with the name "Benjamin T. Pierce." The bindings are very handsome -- however, volume 1 and volume 3 were put in the wrong bindings. It doesn't make a bit of difference as the sit on the shelf, as they are numbered 1, II and III - but it's still an embarrassing binder's error. Considering the recent vintage and high quality of the bindings, we're surprised it was allowed to stand. The first volume contains The Old Batchelor and The Double Dealer. 358 pages. 2 engraved plates. The second volume contains Love for Love and The Way of the World. 514 pages. 2 plates. The third volume contains The Mourning Bride, The Judgement of Paris, Semele, and Poems. 514 pages. 1 plates. A very beautiful example of Baskerville's work. Bindings tight and text block clean and square. Books measure 6 x 9.5 inches.

Add to basketFirst edition. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was perhaps the most important English typographer of the 18th century, whose typeface remains in use today. Preceding the private press movement by over a century, Baskerville took considerable care in every aspect of the design and production of his books, with the aim of creating a beautiful and accessible text. Opting for utility and clarity, he employed a clear and bold typeface without unnecessary flourish and ornamentation, a design choice which acted as a major influence on the course of book history. The present work was one of Baskerville's last productions before his death two years later. This copy includes both the half-title and the final blank, which were often lost in the binding process. Provenance: from the Saxe-Teschen Library, though unmarked as such, with shelf mark on pastedown, and with the bookplate of Henry Tschudy (1882-1961), the owner of the German printing company H. Tschudy & Co. Gaskell 51; ESTC T133320. Quarto (292 x 230 mm). Contemporary continental quarter calf, red morocco label, spine richly gilt, brown paper sides, red and green dotted endpapers. Very light rubbing to covers, minor creasing to some page corners, internally clean. A highly attractive copy.
