Add to basketFirst and only edition of an amorous compilation of Latin poems and other texts, including letters, orations, disputations, text editions with notes, and commentaries. The texts, all on the subjects of love and marriage, were written by various authors, such Daniel Heinsius, Janus Dousa, Desiderius Erasmus, Thomas More, Petrus Scriverius, Scaliger, Cl. Salmasius, L. Capilupi, Ausonius and others. However, the editor of this collection, the well-known humanist and scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) brought Baudius to the fore as the main author. Dominicus Baudius (1561-1613) was a French Neo-Latin poet, scholar and historian who taught at Leiden from 1603-1613 where he became friends with a.o. Justus Lipsius, Janus Dousa, Daniel Heinsius, and Hugo Grotius. His private life was troubled by his drinking habits and love affairs, but he was considered as one of the best letter-writers and Neo-Latin poets of his time. In 1607 Baudius published a new and final version of his poems: Poematum nova edition. The present work includes poems which were omitted from the editions of his Poemata as well as a number of Baudius' letters, recounting his, often unsuccessful, erotic adventures. The famous ancient Latin poem Pervigilium Veneris is also prominently represented with more than one edition (by Justus Lipsius and Salmasius) including notes and commentaries. There are two variant editions of the present work, both printed by Joris Abrahams vander Marsce in Leiden, one for Franciscus Hegerus and Franciscus Hackius (the present copy) and the other for Lud. Elzevier. "Joli edition bien exécutés" (Willems). With the bookplate of C. Peeters, the well-known bibliographer and author of the Annales des Elzevier, mounted on the front pastedown. The binding is in excellent condition. The title-page is lightly browned and soiled, occasional mild foxing on some of the leaves. Otherwise in good condition.l Gay, I, p. 103; Haag, II, p. 27 ("très recherché"); Nodier, p. 5; Pieters, p. 237, no. 1; STCN 833592548 (5 copies); USTC 1028538 (5 copies); Willems, no. 961 (variant 1); cf. Grootens, Dom. Baudius. Een levensschets (1942); M. Roscam Abbing & P. With a woodcut vignette on the title page, several decorated woodcut initials, and woodcut head- and tailpieces, each page has been ruled by hand in reddish brown ink.
