Francesco II Gonzaga eresse il Palazzo di San Sebastiano nei primi anni del Cinquecento: una dimora ufficiale, dal paramento architettonico policromo, che racchiudeva una sequenza di sale, salotti e camerini ricolmi di arredi di sommo splendore. Nella grande sala del piano nobile spiccavano, tra finissimi intagli dorati, i magnifici Trionfi di Cesare di Andrea Mantegna. Nel corso dei secoli, il mirabile palazzo conobbe stagioni di degrado e drammatiche spogliazioni. Ma oggi, grazie a provvidi restauri e inaspettate scoperte, si è recuperata larga parte della decorazione pittorica originale che allietava lo sguardo del committente e della moglie Isabella d'Este e ammaliava gli ospiti.
