I föreliggande arbete dokumenterar Hans Nilsson dessa skivor, allt ifrån sekelskiftets akustiska inspelningar till dagens CD. Författaren ger också en översikt av Bellmansångens historia, presenterar våra mer betydande Bellmantolkare, belyser den tekniska utvecklingen och kommenterar de olika visornas skiftande popularitet under 1900-talet. Är det sant att vår tid föredrar de dystra visorna? Vad beror utvecklingen mot mer teatraliska tolkningar på? Nilsson har funnit 1840 inspelningar. Av dem utgör Fredmans Epistlar 62 procent, Fredmans Sånger 33 och övriga visor fem. Denna inspelningsmängd är unik för svenska visdiktare och utgör ett slagkraftigt bevis för Bellmans popularitet. Dan Andersson, Ferlin, Sjöberg, Taube och andra har långt kvar. Det finns åtminstone 270 inspelningar gjorda i utlandet varav ca hälften är tyska (130 belägg) och en fjärdedel engelska (68). Det danska och finska intresset för Bellman är också värt att notera. Den mest inspelade visan är Fjäriln vingad med 110 belägg. Därnäst kommer Vila vid denna källa 92, Liksom en herdinna 73, Gubben Noach 64, Käraste bröder, systrar och vänner 63, Nå skruva fiolen 58, Ulla! min Ulla! 55, Joachim uti Babylon 54 och Så lunka vi 53. Men det finns visor som saknas i diskografin. Inte mindre än 12 epistlar och 20 sånger söker alltjämt sina uttolkare. Därtill kommer att flera verk bara är inspelade ett fåtal gånger, ofta för mycket länge sedan, med föråldrad teknik och med oacceptabel ljudkvalitet. Only institutional copy of this edition, and also of all of these plates with hand-coloring, held at Harvard, according to OCLC First Search. This is also the best known work of the artist Elis Chiewitz. 4to. 27 by 21 cm. Frontis portrait of Bellman, title page (leaf), 23 hand-colored plates. With frontis portrait, of Bellman playing a lute, 24 hand-colored plates in all. The plates are full bodied portraits of characters in Bellman's drinking songs, and as rendered, most are caricatures of lusty types carousing, making music, having fun. There's a cellist, a tipsy dandy, a young cavalier nodding off, a kettle drummer, a tipsy dowdy mother drinking presumably on the sly, a man blowing his heart out on a French horn, a woman nurturing a pup and a canary, a maid drinking herself sick, etc. etc. Most of the characters are besotted and a bit ridiculous. The portraits are vivid, and even without knowing the narrative upon which they are based, their depiction invites our imagination to flow. They also have a humor and humanity such as supposedly set Bellman's drinking songs apart from the genre, as he is crediting with elevating the popular folkish type of entertaining trifle to something with emotional depth and real artistic expression in both its words and music. The Swede Bellman (1740-1795) was himself not just a composer but a poet and a performer -- hence the lute in his frontis portrait. His two most famous anthologies of songs are Fredman's Epistlar and Fredman's Sanger, which inspired the artwork of this "Gallery" bearing the title. Condition: Spine rebacked, somewhat discreetly, but its calf is nonetheless now dry, rubbed, heavily worn. Boards, with a glossy paper used in the pastedown, worn around the edges, and corners rounded over time, or so it appears. Gilt border decoration still apparent but quite faded. Title and endpapers foxed. Title lower edge roughened. Plate leaves have occasional light fox marks and finger smudges, and a small chip and short closed tear, but the images are all bright and crisp.
