He was severely wounded in North Africa, took part in the magnificent disaster at Tossignano, Italy, where he was captured, and spent the last five months of the war in a POW camp in Germany. John Bendit, Alan's cousin, who followed Alan into the Rifle Brigade a few months later, has edited these lively and affectionate letters home and provided an explanatory narrative which sets them in their historical context.
