With foxing, staining and seepage behind plates. Tissue guards. Bookplate of Edmund Giles Loder. Palms illustrated against natural backgrounds. Berthold Carl Seemann (1825-1871) was a German botanist, who traveled widely. In 1844, he went to the UK to study botany at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. From there he was appointed botanist on the expedition H.M.S. Herald (1845-1851). He collected many specimens along the western coast of North and South America. He died while working in Panama in 1871. He dedicated the book to his compatriot Alexander von Humbolt. Edmund Giles Loder (1849-1921) was an English botanist, plant collector, landowner and planter.

Very scarce in such appealing original condition; the work is seldom seen in the two-volumes of its first edition but more generally the two volumes are bound as one, probably a remainder binding. In 1848 Captain Kellett was ordered to join the search for tracesof Sir John Franklin, in the couse of which he made three sweeps to the northwest and into the Arctic Sea.
