Palms illustrated against natural backgrounds. Berthold Carl Seemann (1825-1871) was a German botanist, who traveled widely. In 1844, he went to the UK to study botany at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. From there he was appointed botanist on the expedition H.M.S. Herald (1845-1851). He collected many specimens along the western coast of North and South America. He died while working in Panama in 1871. He dedicated the book to his compatriot Alexander von Humbolt. Edmund Giles Loder (1849-1921) was an English botanist, plant collector, landowner and planter.
