PROVENANCE: With the typographic & calligraphic bookplate of Theodor Jung (May 29, 1906 - February 19, 1996). Jung was an American photographer, best known for his work with the Farm Security Administration. Red cloth over patterned boards, paper label on spine (label browned with one nick; spine slightly faded; some darkening to boards; minor wear; bookseller catalogue clipping taped to endpaper). One of 400 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. 2 vols pages; Contemporary diced calf leather over glazed paper covered boards. Two heavy volumes, for which extra shipping charges may apply. Somewhat scuffed and worn, but the bindings are sound, with the thick covers well attached. Old ownership signatures partially covered by bookplates of St. Vincent's Abbey, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. The Old Testament, 978 pages, occupies the first volume. The other volume contains the New Testament, 360 pp. -- followed by supplements and corrections to the Testaments, ["Kurze Erläuterung der katholischen Bilder-Bibel - Supplement zum alten Testamente (124 pp.) & -- Supplement zum neuen Testamente, (32 p. only -- of 56?) both these parts with the imprint matching: Leipzig, Baumgärtner's Buchhandlung, 1842]. Text in German, set in double columns of Fraktur type. With over 500 wood-engraved text illustrations. A significant illustrated Bible for Catholics, which used the technical advances of the industrial revolution to make the large work available at a popular price -- ("wohlfeile").

He worked with great neatness and accuracy, yet without pettiness, for he was still a master of the great Baroque line" (F. du F.). Traces de restaurations anciennes en bas de certains feuillets, petite mouillure ancienne sur les tranches affectant quelques marges, sans gravité .RARE.en bon état malgré les défauts signalés.

Full red period morocco, spine with raised bands and elaborate gilt floral tooling within; covers with wide elaborate gilt borders composed of floral and geometric devices, all edges gilt, elaborately gilt inner dentelles; embroidered silk endpapers (front upper hinge starting at foot with rubbing to edges and extremities of spine and boards; front inner hinge split; small bookplate; some browning to text). Size: 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Book.

Embellished with ten maps, and twenty historical engravings." All maps &engravings present; frontsipiece folding map badly wrinkled, torn & with an ink stain; text and plates with significant foxing. Title page torn horizontally across the middle of the page & with edge wear and a stain. Front board detached. Possibly missing blank pages at beginning & end. Bound in full brown leather; spine in six compartments with five raised bands and contrasting maroon leather title label.

Royal quarto, 1310 pages, contemporary blindstamped full sheep, repaired joints and head and foot spine panels replaced, and with new endpapers; The frontispiece has been tipped-in on the new endpaper; rear cover very scuffed, foxing and spots throughout, edgeworn,\ a few minor marginal tears and chips, some leaves imperfectly sewn in. The Family Record leaves have extensive, handwritten notes of the families of Gen. Joseph Badger, Jr. (Signed by him), of Gilmanton, Belmont, NH (father of Gov. Wm. Badger (1834-36). & Charles Jacobs of Gilmanton. Isaiah Thomas, whom Benjamin Franklin called 'the Baskerville of America', was one of the notable publishers during the early days of the Republic.He made every effort to ensure accuracy of the text by comparing some thirty different editions and having the text carefully examined by several clergymen and others, who compared it with eight Bibles - Herbert, 1353." The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas, "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus, this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America, and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American {both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date, altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress]. [ Rumball-Petre, 172; Sabin 5173 (variant); O'Callaghan pp. 40-42; Hills 30]. Evans 23185 states that some copies were issued with no Concordance and 48 additional plates. This state, however, has only two copperplates, as frontispieces ( of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition [plates 29 & 48] ). Included are 200 pages of Tables, Apocrypha and Family Records, Index, , etc. The subscription price was $7, but half the price could be paid in wheat, rye, Indian corn, butter, or pork! It is believed that 1500 copies of each format were printed. "The two Thomas Bibles of 1791 were without doubt far in advance of any other publications of the same kind that had appeared in America in point of typography, excellence of paper, binding, and general execution - Wright, EARLY BIBLES OF AMERICA.".

Before the plates an engraved titlepage with the text: "Biblia Sacra Veteris et Novi Testamenti representata Centum Imaginibus Aeri incisis in Forma dimidii Plagulae transverssae, una cum Expositione dilucidativa. Augustae Vindelicorum. Prostat apud Antonium Klauber. MDCCCXXXV". With 100 large engraved plates. (Plates sign. C.P.S.C.M. - Klauber Cath. Sc. et exc. A.V.). A bit of browning to edges of text and plates. Otherwise internally fine.

Guétant (stamp-signed in gilt on tail of spine), double gilt-ruled border, floral cornerpieces, raised bands, spine panels with scrolling floral borders and central flower ornament, gilt titling. With title vignette and 62 ENGRAVED FOLDING PLATES, ALL WITH BEAUTIFUL HAND COLORING AND HIGHLIGHTED WITH GOLD, depicting Bible scenes from the Old and New Testament, 61 of which are by Jan Luyken. A Large Paper Copy. For earlier editions: Graesse IV, p. 308; Brunet III, 1245-46; Klaversma & Hannema 159-164. Light rubbing to joints and edges, boards just a little marked, trivial foxing and faint spots here and there, but A REMARKABLY FINE COPY, the binding lustrous and showing little wear, the paper extremely bright and fresh, the margins immense, and the paint and gold unusually vibrant. The marvelous illustrations of Dutch engraver and poet Jan Luyken comprise this collection of "remarkable stories" from the Bible, each depicted with panoramic grandeur and enhanced with a wide range of finely applied colors and gold. Luyken (1649-1712) had written and illustrated erotic poetry as a young man, but later became a devout Pietist after reading the works of German mystic Jakob Böhme. He became a member of the Baptist Church in 1673, and thereafter devoted his talents to producing religious works. The vast scenes here are notable in their scale, detail, and animation. There are a number of battle scenes from the Old Testament, as well as dramatic depictions of the plagues, and a fascinating episode from the histories of Josephus, depicting Herod's soldiers being lowered down the side of a cliff in large boxes suspended from chains, in order to attack the thieves hiding in caverns on the cliffside. There is a majestic portrayal of the Queen of Sheba arriving at the court of Solomon, a peaceful scene of Adam naming the beasts in the Garden of Eden, and a festive celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. New Testament scenes include a terrifying final judgment, a blinding conversion of St. Paul, and scenes from that Apostle's travels. The engravings have one common trait: they are heavily populated, whether by men or beasts, and one of Luyken's special gifts is to render every person in the crowd as an individual with his own concerns and reactions to the events at hand. The engravings, while already greatly pleasing in black and white, are even more stirring and memorable when seen in the full color and gold used here. Expansive tableaus are given greater definition and clarity, and events such as Noah's flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah are rendered even more successful in expressing the awesome powers of the Almighty. The illustrations are quite definitely Protestant in point of view: there are no depictions of the Virgin Mary, not even a Nativity scene. Except for engravings of the Annunciation to the Shepherds and the Massacre of the Holy Innocents, the illustrations focus on Jesus as an adult and on the work of his Apostles spreading the gospel. There were earlier editions containing Luyken's 62 large plates, which originally appeared (without text, as here) in 1708, and they appeared again with a text in Dutch in 1729, and in French in 1732. Copies of these editions appear with some regularity in the marketplace, but are usually not colored and are often found incomplete or with other major condition issues. We can trace no record in RBH or OCLC of a copy of our 1790 edition, and we can find nothing that compares with the quality of coloring and grand height attained by the monumental margins seen here.
