His new… series, created over the past 20 years, depicts landscapes in motion. Trees and grasses bend in the wind; steep cliffs and water-sculpted rocks lie shrouded in spray and mist amidst the ocean surf; horizon lines vanish into the white-grey of the sky. The term for "landscape" used in Korea as well as in China and Japan is composed of the words for "wind" and "scenery." It is closely linked to traditional cosmological concepts regarding a quintessence an ether that permeates all living things. The poetic coinage "Windscape" is a literal translation of this term, which carries the same layers of meaning throughout East Asia. Signed and dedicated to Alistair Hicks on the front free end paper.
