paperback. Condition: Gut. 128 Seiten, zahlr. Abb. Einband etw. berieben. - Sprache: Language: Turkish and English. / Probably no other body of work by a Turkish artist reflects the political and cultural realities of the 1980s with an intensity and sweep comparable to that of Gülsün Karamustafa. Fascinated by social conditions generally-in those days local, these days global-, her central theme is best summed up in the word "migration". Nor is her own questing for new pastures by any means over. In a certain sense, Karamustafa's own personal development from an artist of local standing to one who now enjoys worldwide acclaim, could be viewed as epitomizing the change that Turkish art has itself undergone in recent years. The artists who broke radically with traditional Turkish art back in the 1980s and have continued doing so ever since were outsiders not just on the global-in those days predominantly Western-art scene, but in their own country too. They had no support from state institutions (there are no public collections of contemporary art in Turkey) and none from private foundations either. Largely ignored both by Turkish art critics and the local market, they worked for a small circle of art lovers consisting for the most part of other artists, many of whom, like them, were young. Virtually unnoticed by the mainstream art scene, therefore, an entire generation of artists burgeoned and matured until, after years of isolation, the ?stanbul Biennials of the 1990s catapulted them into the international limelight. There, they were hailed as provocative, political, critical, aesthetically radical and fresh. There was talk of the "miracle of ?stanbul," even though most of the initial hype was generated by Turkish art shows outside Turkey, such as ?SKELE in Stuttgart in 1994 and ?SKORPIT in Berlin in 1998. Most of these artists live in ?stanbul. Yet as much as the ?stanbul art scene certainly does shine like a beacon for miles around, this series of monographs also takes account of artists who live in other parts of Turkey or even abroad. The same is true of the authors, who were selected in consultation with the artists and who come from several countries. Ever since I first came into contact with artists in ?stanbul in 1992, I have been trying hard to make sense of an art scene which, poised between Orient and Occident, is surely unparalleled the world over. I am firmly convinced that this series of books will prove invaluable to me in this endeavor and therefore sincerely wish them a wide readership, made up of all those who wish to have a part in this ongoing discovery of the extraordinary vitality and many unsolved mysteries of contemporary Turkish art. The artists' graphics in which at least some of the books will be packed promise to make them much coveted among bibliophiles. And perhaps they may also inspire the art lovers reading them to collect more of the works described. René Block, February 2007. ISBN 9789750812491 tr Gewicht in Gramm: 250.

Bücher verändern die Gesellschaft bei heute.Die technischen Möglichkeiten des Massen-Buchdrucks führten zu einem radikalen Zuwachs an Titeln im 18. Und 19 Jahrhundert.
