In contemporary full mottled calf, spine gilt. The bibliography of La theorie et la pratique du jardinage is complicated by the fact that the work was first published anonymously (1709), then under initials, then as by Alexandre le Blond. He was the noted French garden designer and architect, a pupil of Le Notre, who designed the parterres illustrated in this volume. Indeed, Le Blond was responsible for more than simply the engravings in this work. According to the well-informed connoisseur Pierre-Jean Mariette, chronicler of French artists, he laid out the structural "canvas" of the work and oversaw in detail its writing. The English editions of the book have Le Blond's name on the title page. Le Blond also worked for Peter the Great on Petrodvorets (Peterhof) at St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). Heraldic bookplate for the Biblioteca Peruzzi to front pastedown and a warm and heartfelt manuscript inscription gifting the volume from Contessa Eliza Peruzzi to Francesca [Fanny] Alexander to ffep. The countess (nee Eustafiew) of Russian origin, was a concert pianist who had been one of Chopin's favourite students. Both joints split but holding firm on slips. End-caps chipped. Letter-piece later replacement.

Condition: Good. Quarto. Second edition. Engraved title, 57 plates (2 folding). Original speckled boards, raised bands. Soiling, some offsetting to plates. Lacking front endpaper. Jean-Baptitse Descamps' copy, his bookplate and signature to title page. Descamps was a French writer of art and artist. He painted popular genre subjects in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. He became a member of the Academie Royale in Paris in 1764 and exhibited works at the Salon of 1765. He wrote instructional works, most notably his French translations of artist biographies by Karel van Mander and Arnold Houbraken in his 4-volume La Vie des Peintres Flamands, Allemands et Hollandois. Le Blond produced the editions of the Cours d'architecture de Vignole translated with commentary by Charles-Augustin d'Aviler, which Le Blond illustrated with his own drawings. These works introduced the distinctions between state apartments (appartements de parade) and private apartments (appartements de commodit̮'̩s) that would characterize French eighteenth-century planning, and he popularized the small chimneypieces that would take the place of the large ones in the Italian mode, popular in the previous century.
