This book offers a detailed treatise on political theory from the 16th century, translated from Italian and based on the Spanish original by Pedro Mexia. Initially authored by Pedro de la Cerda in 1527, this text was highly influential in European courtly and political circles. It follows the development of political thought, and models of counsel and advice-giving, in the Tudor period, in relation to Machiavelli and other continental writers. The author explores the role of humoral theory in the development of political counsel, which would later influence the work of Juan Huarte de San Juan. This book is an ideal resource for scholars of early modern European politics and intellectual history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Small woodcut ornament on title, floriated woodcut initials, typographical ornaments, a few woodcut diagrams in text, 'John Wooly' his book in contemporary hand on fly, 'Maria Whitorne' in early hand on title, another autograph, below, 'Thomas Leech ex libris, 1707' on verso of last, and ex dono on title page, trial letter reporting the death of a family member on recto of last fly, fragments of verse in a later hand. Light age yellowing, expert repairs to extreme fore-edge of first five leaves, and last two, very rare mark or spot. A very good copy, crisp and clean, with good margins in fine contemporary calf over boards, covers single gilt and double blind ruled to a panel design, fleuron gilt to outer corners, large arabesque of crowned Tudor rose gilt stamped at centres, T and B gilt on either side, R and W blind stamped in outer borders, spine double gilt ruled in compartments, vellum stubbs, waste from earlier account book on pastedowns, all edges sprinkled red, extremities expertly restored. A handsome copy of this most interesting work in fine contemporary calf, the third edition. Thomas Blundeville (c. 1522 c. 1606) was an English humanist writer and mathematician. He is known for work on logic, astronomy, education and horsemanship, as well as for translations from the Italian; he freely adapted a number of the works he translated. "Born in Norfolk, Blundeville has been comparatively ignored by historians of science and technology: he seems to have been educated at Cambridge : Later he is associated with Gresham college and the group that included Henry Briggs, . William Gilbert, . Edward Wright, and William Barlow, the later two both instrument makers who wrote on navigation. Along with his contemporaries at Gresham, Blundeville was one of several 'mathematical practitioners' . who often took up residence in London as they sought to make a living either through commercial publication, private instruction, patronage, consultation on state sponsored projects, or instrument making. Blundeville demonstrates considerably broader range that other practitioners of the period, however, and in this he is somewhat atypical of technical writers. .The increasing conceptual proximity between practical and productive modes of knowledge and the growing extension of deliberative thinking that we find in Harvey . is also visible in other sixteenth -century dialectic textbooks, particularly those written in the vernacular such as Thomas Blundeville's 'Arte of Logicke'. Blundeville observes Aristotle's definition of the five modes of intellect, 'Intelligence, Science, Prudence, Art, and Sapience'. . As he continues, however, Blundeville follows Aristotle in reducing these five modes of intellect to two - the practical and the theoretical . his 'Art of Logicke' uses arithmetical and geometrical concepts of proportion to explain ratiocinative procedures in logic and even illustrates them with geometrical diagrams." Henry S. Turner . 'The English Renaissance Stage: Geometry, Poetics'. "Thomas Bludeville's the arte of logicke, 1599, illustrates the share that logic could have in the teaching of expression, and of how different from ours were the presuppositions and methods of that teaching. Blundeville, following an earlier sixteenth-century logician, is showing the different 'proofs' that can be adduced in 'respecte of the 'theame or proposition' man ought to embrace virtue .Whether or not he learnt any logic, a schoolboy carrying out an exercise of this kind would be extending his skill in the precise control of language." Ian Michael. 'The Teaching of English: From the Sixteenth Century to 1870'. A lovely copy of this rare work ESTC S102667. STC 3144.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 8vo. (18 cm), [6], 22; [7], 81; [3], 22; [9], 87, [1] leaves (the second part with folios numbered from 1-81, lacks the two folios numbered 10 & 11). 4 parts in one; black letter, general and part titles within pictorial woodcut border, 53 full-page woodcuts of horse bits, several other illustrations including 2 pages of horse shoes, contents leaf with notes in a contemporary hand on reverse. Parts 2-4 have special title pages, all dated 1597. Part 2 is an abridgment and adaptation of Federico Grisone's "Ordini di cavalcare." Other parts include The Art of Riding, The Order of Dieting of Horses, and The Order of Curing Horse Diseases. Front and rear cover detached, flyleaves missing, the signature of an early owner (David Bateson) appears on the title page. The title page has a 1 in. x 2 ½ in. chip on the lower front edge; A.ii is a trifle brittle and darkened on the front edge; there is a small stain on page 29 of The Order of Curing. The same page shows a marginal hand-written notation apparently describing an additional formula for treating ill horses. The verso of the last page shows another hand-written note which apparently prescribes a remedy or medicine for treating a horse bitten by a "mad dog." Despite the foregoing imperfections this is a very clean copy of an edition more rare than other 16th-century editions (of which there were 3: 1566, 1570 & 1593). A similar copy sold at auction in 2012 for fifty-nine hundred dollars. The MS note seems to be a partial transcription from the 17th century English translation: The Works of Ambrose Parey (Pare). A few legible words from the MS note: "Against ye biting of a madde dogge One of the daughters of Madamoiselle De Gron. at Paris being bytten by a madde dogge in the mydest of her right legge . rubbing the place until it bledd then you must. upon the wounde apply.garlicke or onions stamped or beaten with.and turpentyne.".

Bound to style in modern blindstamped brown calf with giltstamped red spine label and sparsely gilt spine. Some 17th- or 18th-c. ink annotations. Blundevill(e) (1522-1606) was, according to the Arabian Jockey Club, "one of the founders of the thoroughbred industry." He originally translated Gisone's "Gli Ordini di Cavalcare" (1550) as "The Art of Rydynge" (1560), which was the first modern treatise on classical dressage and later incorporated as one of the chapters of this book. First published in 1565/66; all editions published prior to 1650 are considered uncommon. - DNB V, 271.

First edition. First edition. Six parts in one. A-Z8Aa-Vvt8 Yy6. 3 folding woodcut and/or printed plates/tables, woodcut illustrations and diagrams, including 4 with volvelles (at ff. 145, 151 [misnumbered 149], 338v and 350), A1 blank except for printed signature "A" (and old inscriptions). 4to. An important book in the history of navigation. "Here for the first time the modern forms of the trigonometric functions of sine, tangent and secant were published in English" (Tomash & Williams). The six parts comprise Treatise of arithmetic; The first principles of cosmographie; A plaine description of Mercator and his two globes; Petrus Plancius his universall map; Plaine description of Maister Blagrave his astrolabe; A new and necessarie treatise of navigation. "Thomas Blundeville's Excercises . gave convincing proof that all the business of learning navigation now started with a grounding in mathematics and finished up with acquiring a knowledge of astronomy and an even wider knowlege of charts, maps, globes, astrolabes and other instruments and their use; between its fat covers, his Exercises, dealt with all these subjects for the benefit of 'young gentlemen' who would be navigators. Its contents afford a remarkable contrast to what was available on the subject to Englishmen only forty years before. A most useful feature were tables of trigonometrical functions natural sines, tangents and secants. They were indeed the first published in England and their publication in the convenient quarto form was to transform within a few years the manner in which seamen solved many navigational problems. Blundeville's Exercises of 1594 epitomizes the intellectual revolution that had occurred amongst Englishmen since the first English oceanic expedition had been prepared and sailed in 1553 [Sir Hugh Willoughby's expedition in search of a northeast passage from England to China]" (Waters, English Navigational Books, Charts and Globes Printed Down to 1600, pp. 255-6). Of particular note within the work is a summary of the voyage of Sir Francis Drake and his use of the Molyneaux globe (f. 242v), as well as the voyage of Thomas Cavendish (244r). In addition, within a lengthy section on Plancius's world map, Blundeville includes descriptions of China (255v) and the South Pole (271v). The first edition is scarce. Only two other copies have appeared at auction in the last half century: the DuPont-Frank Streeter copy (Dupont sale, Christies, $3520 in 1991; Frank Streeter sale, Christie's, $20,400 in 2007) and another, lacking the preliminary leaf, selling for $6240 at Swann in 2006. The work proved popular, with new editions following this first edition in 1597, 1606, 1613, 1622, and 1636. Tomash & Williams B180; ESTC S102547; Sabin 6023; STC 3146; USTC 512492; Alden & Landis 594/13 Later flexible vellum with yapp edges. Minor tear to a folding table. The seventh edition, corrected and somewhat enlarged by Ro. Hartwell philomathematicus, Contemporary calf, rebacked. A very important book in the history of navigation The Exercises described the world map of Petrus Plancius, Molyneaux s large terrestrial globe, being the first globe to be made in England, the works of John Balgrave, Gemma Frisius, and the cross-staff of Thomas Hood. He first published his Exercises in six parts, containing a brief account of arithmetic, cosmography, the use of the globes, a universal map, the astrolabe, and navigation. The arithmetic is taken from Recorde, but to it are added trigonometrical tables (copied from Clavius) of the natural sines, tangents, and secants of all angles in the first quadrant; the difference between consecutive angles being one minute. These are worked out to seven places of decimals. This is the earliest English work in which plane trigonometry is introduced. Later editions including this 1636 edition (from 1613 onwards) showed the circumnavigations of Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish. His circle of friends included Sir Nicholas Bacon and mathematicians and astronomers including John Dee, Edward Wright, Henry Briggs and William Gilbert.
