Un volume in-4 ( 31x24 cm), reliure éditeur, cartonnage toilé de couleur verte, couvert d'une jaquette de couleur crème, illustrée sur le 1er plat par la photo légèrement sépia de deux sculptures de dragons (très léonins) gardant l'entrée d'un temple, avec 288 pages précédées d'une introduction (XXIIpp.), se terminant par une carte de la Chine, suivie d'une Liste des illustrations groupées par provinces (au nombre de 12), et d'un Index des noms propres (de personnes ou de groupes). Viennent ensuite les PHOTOGRAVURES, au nombre de 288. Elle sont toutes de teinte légèrement sépia et d'une remarquble qualité, tant dans la prise de vue que dans leur tirage et leur impression.Il faut ici évoquer la personnalité de Ernst BOERSHMANN (1873-1949), qui est à la fois l'auteur du texte et des photographies. Architecte et Historien de nationalité allemande, il consacra sa vie professionnelle à des recherches sur l'Architecture traditionnelle en Chine. De 1924 à 1944, il enseigna au Technische Hochschule de Charlottenburg.Pendant cette période il fut, semble-t-il le meilleur spécialiste dans son domaine, même si la langue allemande ne lui permit peut-être pas de connaître, à cette époque, l'accueil que ses travaux eurent reçu, écrits par un Anglais ou un Américain.Depuis ses ouvrages, et particulièrement depuis celui que nous proposons, nombres d'édifices chinois ayant été photographiés dans ce livres ont sans doute été détruits d'une manière ou d'une autre, de telle sorte que les travaux photographiques d'Ernst BOERSCHMANN peuvent apporter un support extraordinaire pour la reconstruction ou au moins la connaissance de l'architecture chinoise traditionnelle.Ajoutons à cela que son texte témoigne d'une érudition et d'une compréhension de la culture et des philosophies chinoises qu' il a probablement peu d'équivalents.Le texte initial publié à Berlin en 1925 a été traduit en Anglais pour THE STUDIO par Louis HAMILTON mais pas en français. Bien que notre exemplaire soit en langue anglaise chacune des photos est assortie d'une légende trilingue (allemand, anglais et français) . Signalons quelques marques d'usage et d'humidité sur la jaquette, qui a été réparée. Mais l'intérieur de l'ouvrage, édité sur un très beau papier, qui met particulièrement en valeur les photogravures, est en très bon état.…
