Boerschmann first saw China in 1902 when assigned to the German Army in Shantung province (Germany's sphere of influence formalized 1897 (after British acquisition Hong Kong in 1842) --- aftermath of two Opium Wars (1839 - 1842, & 1856 - 1860) triggered by the Ch'ing Dynasty's attempt to prohibit rampant importation of opium by Western powers grown by the British East India Company and opium dens were so prolific that drugged-out China became known as the "Sick Man of Asia". Shantung Province, home to Confucius, became German property, and famous for brewing of Ching-dao beer. This this and led to Boerschmann's priceless records of traditional Chinese architecture! Contents preserve historic sites of 12 provinces. 288 pgs of bridges, cave monasteries, graves, memorial gates, temples, mosques, and Buddha figures.
