Im Vorwort schildert Newton einen Besuch bei Robert Borthwick Adam in Buffalo, dessen bedeutende Boswell-Sammlung 1948 in die Houghton Library kam. In kleiner, aber nicht genannter Auflage veröffentlichte der Sammler hier "for his friends" zahlreiche Faksimileseiten aus dem Korrekturexemplar des Dichter mit vielen handschriftlichen Anmerkungen.
