Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Volume 19 is "good" with four raised bands, title in gilt to red leather spine label; Volume XX is "Very good minus" with five raised bands, gilt devices bright to spine, some fraying to head of spine. Volume 19 smells old, but not objectionably so. This pair of bound volumes -- half leather over Dutch-marbled, paper-covered boards -- have similar bindings, but are not an exact matched pair. Volume 19 has plain endpapers; Vol. XX has marbled endpapers to match its boards. Volume 19 includes Numbers 451-476, Volume XX Numbers 477-501 of the weekly journal, founded and edited by Charles Dickens. The first volume contains the first two-thirds (23 installments, Jan. 4 through June 6, 1868), and the second volume the final third of Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone" in the numbers of June 13 through Aug. 8, 1868, this serialization comprising the first complete publication of this celebrated classic of detective/mystery fiction. These are the final two volumes in the "old series" of the weekly literary magazine before Dickens instituted his "New Series," the announcement for which appears on the final page of Volume XX. T. S. Eliot called "The Moonstone . . . the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels in a genre invented by Collins and not by Poe." Dorothy Sayers praised it as "probably the very finest detective story ever written." Franklin Blake, the gifted amateur, is an early example of the gentleman detective, while the novel has also been described as perhaps the earliest police procedural, due to the portrayal of the highly competent Sergeant Cuff, the London policeman called in from Scotland Yard (whom Collins based on the real-life Inspector Jonathan Whicher, who solved the Constance Kent murder.) "The Moonstone," representing Collins' only complete reprisal of the popular "multi-narration" method he'd previously utilized in "The Woman in White," was first published in book form later in 1868 by Tinsley Brothers, London, that triple-decker now frequently fetching $4,000. Some scattered foxing to preliminary and final pages. (Page edges of Vol. XX are marbled, while page edges of Vol. 19 are plain, with faded burgundy topstain. Dutch marbling to boards and endpapers, while bright and attractive, appears to be a printed pattern.) This pair of bound volumes of the magazine -- containing the first complete appearance in print of Wilkie Collins' pioneer mystery "The Moonstone" -- now reduced from $1,700.

Octavo, thirty-two volumes, pictorial wrappers uniformly bound in green cloth. A complete file of 181 issues in bound volumes. Doc Savage was a precursor to the modern super hero. Clark "Doc" Savage, Jr. was trained from birth with a rigorous regimen resulting in extraordinary strength and intelligence. He never killed unless necessary, he had scientific gadgets, a headquarters and a secret base (a fortress of solitude). The stories combined mystery, adventure and some science fiction. He also had a team of five experts in various fields to assist in his adventures. His stories were extremely popular during the pulp era and then found a new audience in the 1960s-70s when the series was reprinted in paperback. The novels were written using the house pseudonym of Kenneth Robeson, the main author was Lester Dent who wrote nearly 80% of the novels. Other author contributors as Robeson included William Bogart, Alan Hathway, Harold Davis, Laurence Donovan and W. Ryerson Johnson. There were many excellent contributors to the short stories which rounded out the magazine with authors such as Steve Fisher, E. Hoffman Price, Q. Patrick, John D. MacDonald, Bruno Fischer, Frank Herbert, William Lindsay Gresham, to name a few. Street and Smith publishing executive Henry Ralston and editor John Nanovic established the initial idea for Clark "Doc" Savage, Jr. - .a brawny 'superman,' a master of many fields-surgeon, mineralogist, engineer, inventor, linguist. His skin was a glowing bronze.his hair was a matching hue, and so too his eyes, resembling gold flake. He would be known as the Man of Bronze."- Server, Encyclopedia of Pulp Fiction Writers, p.81. "Doc Savage was intended to be an adventure character, but under Lester Dent's imaginative manipulations he became something more - the first superhero and an inspiration for countless pulp, comic-book, and television characters." - Cook, Mystery, Detective and Espionage Magazines, pp. 521-527. "The enormously wealthy Doc Savage headquartered in a fantasticated New York with his five sidekicks, who specialize in various crafts and sciences at the borderline of sf devotes his life to combating criminal conspiracies, almost all masterminded by the kind of charismatic villain later given definitive form by Ian Fleming in the James Bond books. Doc Savage himself clearly influenced the creation of Superman." - SFE online. A note on artists, Walter Baumhofer contributed the initial look to the character with his striking cover painting through late 1936. Other artists include R[obert] G[eorge] Harris, Emery Clarke, Modest Stein, and George Rozen. An ideal collection for an institution. [Reference: Tymm and Ashley, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Weird Fiction Magazines, pp. 183-185]. Tanning to pages of all, some minor losses throughout, front and back covers present, bindings are bright with the exception of volumes 10-13 which are quite faded. All issues trimmed for binding. Overall, the magazines are very good to nearly fine. The complete list report upon request. [Note for shipping, extra funds required]. (34571).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. [Chevrier, François-Antoine]Recueil de ces dames. A Bruxelles.[Paris] aux dépens de la compagnie, 1745. 8vo. xvi + 290p. Late 18th century French red morocco with Talleyrand arms of three crowned lions rampant and motto 'Re Que Diou' gilt-stamped in centres of sides within triple line borders, spine gilt with olive morocco title label, edges gilt, marbled endpapers. First edition of this satire on the frivolity of contemporary society ladies, apparently the earliest book by the acerbic writer and pamphleteer, François-Antoine Chévrier (1721-62), best known for his libellous Le Colporteur (1762) shortly after whose publication he was forced to flee to Holland and was supposedly murdered there. This superbly bound volume is a fine example of the earliest period of book-collecting by Charles Maurice de Talleyrand (1754-1838), celebrated statesman and connoisseur, who used the arms of his father, Charles-Daniel Comte de Perigord (1734-88), to decorate the bindings of only some of his favourite books. A selection from Talleyrand s first library was sold at Sotheby s in 1793 to support himself as a refugee in England; a second, more extensive selection was sold in London in 1816 to pay debts. But most of his books, notably those kept at the library at Valençay, only contained armorial bookplates which makes this volume so special. A unique opportunity to acquire a choice item from Talleyrand's first library which contained only a very few volumes bearing his arms as supra libros. A fine copy elegantly bound in the best tradition of 18th century bibliophily. For the arms of Charles Comte de Talleyrand, father of Charles Maurice, who married Alexandrine-Marie-Victoire-Eleonore de Damas d'Antigny cf: Olivier I, plate 944. From the library of Robert S.Pirie, lawyer-banker & distinguished collector (1935-2015); with presentation inscription to him by Jayne Wrightsman, collector and philanthropist, dated 2006. Gay III,947.

[PIGOTT, CHARLES] THE JOCKEY CLUB; OR A SKETCH OF THE MANNERS OF THE AGE. Part the Second. The Second Edition. Printed for H. D. Symonds, Paternoster-Row. 1792. [x] + 186 pp. (lacks pp. 171-72; facsimile included). ESTC N29110. Thomas Erskine (1750-1823), was a Scottish Whig lawyer and politician who defended the radicals prosecuted by the government in the 1790s. This text is part of an extensive pamphlet war on the French Revolution and subsequent execution of Louis XIV and war with France. Here he is attacking the views of Edmund Burke (1729-97), who had started the controversy with his Reflections on the Revolution in France in 1790, as expressed in his Letters on the Prospect of a Regicide Peace (1796). The Present War with France was a bestseller and thirty five editions were published in 1797. As first baron, Erskine served in the office of Lord High Chancellor, 1806-07. The Short Review was published anonymously, but is known to be the work of Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall (1751-1831), author and politician, who was created first baronet in 1813. After early employment by the East India Company, 1769-82, he returned home, travelled extensively in Europe and served as a Tory MP for three different constituencies, 1780-94, being later chiefly known for his published European memoirs. This pamphlet is a dispassionate review of the state of Britain in 1787 with some linked observations on other European states. The Jockey Club was also published anonymously, but is known to be the work of Charles Pigott (d.1794), satirist and radical. The work, using partly disguised names, satirises fashionable society and the conduct of life of the upper classes (the actual Jockey Club was founded in 1750). The first part was published in 1792 and there was also a third part and another work by Pigott, The Female Jockey Club (1794). A FINE SET INSIDE AND OUT. This finely bound, finely printed, and strictly limited set includes the biography, prose, letters, essays, and poetry of "the prince of English essayists." According to Day, Charles Lamb contributed to the essay form by concentrating on feeling (rather than thought), by projecting a fuller sense of self into the work, and by imbuing his text with a poetic or lyrical quality. Lamb was also an accomplished poet, writing in both rhyming and blank verse, as well as a friend to many of the leading literary figures of the Romantic period--his correspondents include Wordsworth, Southey, Hazlitt, and Coleridge, whom he had known since childhood. Lamb's letters, by turns witty and meditative, reveal a life of intense reading and writing at a time when British literature was undergoing a radical transformation. Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was educated at Christ's Hospital and at 17 joined the East India House, where he worked from 1792-1825. In 1796, Lamb's sister Mary stabbed and killed their mother with scissors in a fit of insanity. Charles took on her care as well as serving as sole support for a dying aunt and a prematurely senile father. Nonetheless, Lamb and his sister were devoted to one another and lived long and productive lives, publishing together the wildly popular "Tales from Shakespeare" (1807) and "Mrs. Leicester's School" (1809), both of which are included here. Though unsigned, the bindings are extremely attractive and fittingly luxurious for the limited-edition contents--the thick gilt tooling, luxurious doublures, and red silk endpapers housing tactilely pleasing Japanese vellum make this set a delight both to have and to hold. Edmonton Edition. No. 56 OF 100 COPIES on Japanese vellum.
