Scarce first edition of Branko Cegec's debut work of literary criticism, bringing together seven essays devoted to the literature of the historical avant-garde and its post-avant-garde continuations. Published in Zagreb, the volume belongs to the first generation of Croatian studies that re-examined the legacy of the interwar avant-garde at a time when interest in historical modernism and experimental writing was being renewed throughout Yugoslavia. Cegec explores the continuity between the historical avant-garde and later experimental literary practices, analysing the aesthetic, ideological, and linguistic transformations of avant-garde discourse. The essays examine how the radical literary experiments of the 1920s continued to shape post-war Yugoslav literature, positioning the avant-garde not as a closed historical episode but as an ongoing critical and artistic practice. Its publication preceded his influential editorial work for the literary magazine Quorum, through which he became one of the principal figures of the Croatian postmodern literary generation and an important mediator between the historical avant-garde and contemporary experimental writing. As of June 2026, OCLC shows only two copies worldwide in Germany and the UK, of which not held by any American institutions (see OCLC 499411100).…
