British architect and politician (1798-1873), Member of Parliament for Bath, 1855-73. Three pages, 12mo. Very good, but with two stubs from previous mounting adhering to inner margin of verso of second leaf of bifoliate. Baillie was a very different man & as a Scotch Member (Invernessshire) had a following of considerable Value believe me'. Signed 'Willm Tite'. Baillie served as an M.P. until 1868, which is consequently the latest date for the letter.

Begins: 'My dear Sir, / Vernon Heath, of Piccadilly, has made me a photograph of our new front, which is I think fairly satisfactory.' He has told Heath to deliver a copy 'addressed to you at the R. Add to basketBoth letters good, on lightly aged paper. Both items concern Canning's article on 'International Relations' in the October 1877 issue of 'The Nineteenth Century'. Letter One (12mo, 4 pages, bifolium with mourning border). Knowles hopes Canning has received the proof of the article from the publishers Spottiswoodes. A judicious bit of sycophancy follows. 'Please allow me to repeat how very greatly I am obliged to your lordship for this essay which seems to me to be as readable as it is wise and interesting - The concluding passages of it especially if you will permit me to say so - are precisely what should proceed from such a high standard of Patriotism as you have yourself set up'. Knowles then suggests a passage 'which might as well be omitted', giving his reasons. Letter Two (12mo, 3 pp): Enclosing a cheque (not present) for thirty guineas in payment for the article. Knowles feels that Canning's 'admirable paper' has placed him under 'great obligation': 'The article has been extracted from and referred to in the most respectful & complimentary manner by many of the best & highest journals & cannot fail to do good in various ways'. Knowles considers it 'a contribution to the Subject which is most valuable & exhaustive as to the principles which should favour its application'. He now turns his 'eyes towards your promised paper upon Spain'. While his wife was staying at St Leonards he would have liked to have called on Canning at Frant, 'as you so kindly gave me leave to do - but unfortunately was so tied & bound by work in London that I could only run to & fro' by the quickest & non-stopping trains - & hence, for the time at any rate, lost my opportunity'.

For John George Jackson (c.1798-c.1851), architect of Leamington Priors, pupil of P. F. Robinson, see Lyndon F. Cave's 'Royal Leamington Spa' (1988). He erected Newbold Lodge on the site of Strawberry Cottage in the early 1830s. See the entry for the recipient William Hookham Carpenter (1792-1866), later Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, in the Oxford DNB. At the time of the present letter Carpenter was working for his father the Old Bond Street bookseller James Carpenter (c.1768-1852). 2pp, 8vo. Bifolium. Addressed with postmark on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr Wm Carpenter | New Bond Street'. In fair condition, lightly aged. Spikeholes through the centre of both leaves, and also Jackson's signature, discreetly repaired with archival tape. Folded three times. The letter begins: 'If your Father will be so good as to send to Messrs. Ladbrookes Kingscote & Gillman Bank Bldgs, they are advised to pay to Mr Carpenter the sum of £18 . 6 . 2 on Monday the 5th. and when convenient I shall be obliged by receipt.' He is sorry to hear of Mrs Carpenters indisposition, and hopes 'that the approaching Summer will re instate her in health'. He continues: 'You laugh at the bust on my Pedestal but I can assure you he is one of the Worthies, ay & a Warwickshire Worthy. It is William Shakespeare whom I placed there on the Anniversary of his Birth Day Ap 23d.' If Carpenter has 'any communication with Mr Woolryche', Jackson would like to 'ascertain his ideas on the following subject. When last here he spoke of his desire to have a villa in the immediate neighbourhood, and one of my building men is shortly about to erect a Villa in a very beautiful situation. If I could obtain Mr Woolryches ideas and found them such as would answer for a general saleable residence I would endeavor to have the building erected accordingly'. Endorsed at head of first page: 'Mr. Carpenter's best Compts. to Mr Gillman'.

Add to basket2pp., foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. On aged and worn paper, with some repairs to the chipped extremities. Begins: 'I have carefully examined this account and various papers connected therewith: and have received detailed verbal & written explanations thereof from Mr. Wood; I have carefully considered Messrs. Byrne's & Darley's report thereon; [.]'. Concludes: '[.], I am of opinion that Mr. Wood is fully justified in all the charges made by him in this account; that those charges are fair and moderate in account, and are all such as are justified by the general practice of the Profession: and I state this not merely as my opinion, but as a fact capable of direct and unquestionable proof.' For more information about the two men, who were related through their mothers (Harriet and Elizabeth Russell), see their entries in the Oxford DNB. According to Sancton Wood's obituary (Institution of Civil Engineers, 1886): 'Having manifested a taste for drawing, he was, through his mother's influence, admitted into the office of his cousin, Sir Robert Smirke, RA., who was then one of the leading London architects ; from this office he was transferred to that of Mr. Sydney Smirke, R.A., who succeeded to his brother's practice. He remained with Mr. Sydney Smirke for several years after the expiration of his articles, and was engaged upon the drawings of many important works; amongst others may be mentioned the sketches of the designs for rebuilding the Houses of Parliament, which Sir Robert Smirke had prepared for Sir Robert Peel's government before the House of Commons decided in favour of an open competition.'.
