In contemporary half calf binding with gilt-decorated raised bands and title label to spine, and cobbled cloth on the boards. With 25 hand coloured and 3 black and white plates, including the frontispiece. The binding is clean and sound but with a lot of chipping and scuffing to the leather surface, particularly around the top of the spine where the top spine end has some fraying and the joint with the front board is beginning to show a small split (about 1 cm). The spine joints are generally rubbed. The cloth is faded towards the top edge of both boards with some bubbling in the faded area on the back board. There is some pale marking and a scuff to the surface on the front board. Corners with light rubbing. Internally there is a small cut out label with the owner's name on the front free endpaper. Contents: hand coloured frontispiece; title; contents and preface xix; text pp 1-202; writers on conchology 203-238; nomenclature p 239; table of colours 240-242; plate list 243-5; 3 black and white and 24 hand coloured plates; Publisher's ad 2pp. The contents are clean with delicate colouring to the plates. There is sporadic light spotting to the text pages - most frequently in the margins and some browning at the top page edge.
