Condition: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Artist/sculptor Charles G. Simonds has dreamed up a superb collection of highly-rendered drawings that fill LOGBOOK. Logs seemed to have played an important role in his life, with deep connections to his father's sailboat journeys on the San Francisco Bay, and grandparents's logging activities on Vinegar Ridge, Mendocino County (see Simonds' introductory statement). But certainly his ancestors couldn't have imagined the unusual log shapes Mr. Simonds has fashioned here--one pillar presents a vertical wooden boat stuck in its side, another has your everyday, several-foot-long, carved pair of scissors. There's a tiny house carved atop a log, with even tinier windows. Others just emit emotional responses, like some frightening spikes ("2 TRIPODS"), heads stacked high in a totem pole column ("LOGGERHEADS"), others simply exhibiting impossible configurations, with titles to match ("CYLENDRIGALS" is a favorite). Some shapes are recognizable, though never viewed before in this artistic context. These unusual works would make a fantastic sculptural show in any art gallery--a room filled with 6'-7' high wooden columns that speak volumes. They represent original visions, but spark a past recognition that our lives were once inexplicably dependent on harvesting such log-lengths from ancient forests for our log cabins. In delivering the 50 pages of his surreal log drawings, he has managed to somehow re-focus the viewer, conjuring up a "time land forgot." (Or maybe it's the other way around--Mr. Simonds' LOGBOOK can do that to a person) In any case, please enjoy how these elegant drawings can shift your reality, so that an everyday computer term like "log-in" suddenly has a brand new spin.

Condition: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 74 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Through the centuries, professional artists of the highest caliber have temporarily entertained themselves by diverting focus from their major oeuvre, to entertain their inner-passions of one kind or another. C. G. Simonds is no exception. This slim volume, CHUCK'S ART-TOONS, reveals both his stinging wit and his skills as a master draughtsman. He has the ability to create powerful visual puns, raw and off the wall, reshaping our preconceived notions of such subjects as "Polly Ticks" (mouth the words), serious occupations; "Arc O' Texts," or just fun topics like, say, "Left Behind" (use your imagination.). It's worth adding that these humorous asides are a carryover from Simonds' serious Fine Art activities; he's a devoted sculptor and craftsman, fashioning his wood and cast metal fabrications into world-class works of art. The praise for Simonds (see back cover) by Thomas Albright, an historically-important art critic and author of the definitive tome on Northern California works, "Art in the San Francisco BAY AREA 1945-80," can attest to the fact that a "Distinguished Artist" is the author of this delightful collection.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Three bound volumes ( covering Oct.1926 to Sept. 1929 ), in the official binding, of the house magazine of the famous Reading brewers. Contents are a lively miscellany of company matters, news, humour, drawings, photos, stories etc. Much of it discussing the licensed trade and Simonds' part in it. Scarce - Oxford University and the BL have part sets ( although both sites are vague about what they actually have. Oxford state that the journal ran until 1966 but their holding is described as 'irregular' - presumably loose issues ), no other institutional holdings. Clean, tight and sound copies. The blue cloth bindings are just slightly rubbed at extremities, a very presentable run of the first three volumes. No inscriptions. 1436 ( over the first 2 vols. ) + 676 pages, plates and illustrations throughout. Size: 8vo. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History ; brewing; Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 24223.
