Hannaway was director of the Center for the History and Philosophy of Science at Johns Hopkins University. He authored numerous books and served as an editor of academic magazines in the history of science. Partial list of publications: Chemists and the Word: The Didactic Origins of Chemistry (1975); Observation, Experiment, and Hypothesis in Modern Physical Science (1985); The Evolution of Technology (1989); Science and the Practice of Medicine in the Nineteenth Century (1994); and The Foundations of Modern Science in the Middle Ages: Their Religious, Institutional and Intellectual Contexts (1996). Alan Mason Chesney was a medical researcher and dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for twenty four years starting in 1929. While dean, Chesney began working on a three-volume history, The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine: A Chronicle. Chesney's efforts to preserve the early records that he located in his research resulted in the establishment in 1978 of the archives which bears his name. He also served as managing editor for the magazine Medicine for more than twenty years, was a president of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, and was president of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He was a staunch proponent for high academic standards in medical education.

Glassine tissue jacket has a few nicks in it. Title page dated 1939. 87 pages -- all uncut! Contents are in very good condition. Binding is strong. Pages are clean and unmarked. There is some discoloration to the front endpapers from a sheet of newspaper that was tucked inside -- a clipping from a 1955 issue of The Sun Magazine on the 'Big Four' at Johns Hopkins, written by James F. Mitchell. SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Overall, book is in very good condition.
