Christo and Jeanne-Claude were a pair of artists who designed, coordinated, and funded large-scale environmental art installations. Active since the 1960s, Reichstag Wrapped in 1995 was one of their crowning achievements. Christo described the piece, their physical wrapping in the Reichstag building in a fabric made of aluminum-coated propylene, as autobiographical. He related the wrapping to the reunification of Berlin and the importance of that act to Eastern Europeans. The wrapping of the Reichstag building also represented the return of Berlin to center of the art and political world. (Chicago Tribune, 1986). 1410891. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.

Add to basket28 x 30cm 321pp good hardback published in 1972 during the golden era of Abrams monographs, this classic publication on Christo provides a well-illustrated overview of the artist s early career, including an essay by David Bourdon. It features colour and black-and-white photography of many of Christo s first Wrapped Objects (1958 69), which incorporate conventional art materials such as paint cans and pigment bottles, swathed in resin-soaked canvas, as well as a number of topographical maps and plans printed on vellum. The book has a partially transparent plastic jacket through which a cross section of a drawing reproduced on the cover is visible, alluding to the Wrapped Objects, which alternately reveal and conceal the items identities. The jacket has some marks and several areas of damage including loss to head of spine and base of spine, plus a long tear at the rear travelling from the head over to the left side of jacket. Christo Vladimirov Javacheff (1935 2020) and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (1935 2009), known as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, were artists noted for their large-scale, site-specific environmental installations, often large landmarks and landscape elements wrapped in fabric, including the Wrapped Reichstag, The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Running Fence in California, and The Gates in New York City's Central Park.A heavy item, may need extra postage.

Condition: Fine. First Edition. Deluxe first edition ("Special Edition") with fabric swatch mounted to back pastedown. 696 pp., profusely illustrated with color photographs. Oblong quarto, bound in publisher's silver cloth lettered in blue on spine. Fine. Housed in the original slipcase, printed paper and silver cloth, with spot of soiling to upper edge. The story of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's 24-year quest to wrap Germany's historic parliament building in woven silvery cloth held with blue rope. The two artists were known for their monumental fabric installations, of which this was the most iconic. The installation subverted the imposing dignity of the famous building, a Neo-Renaissance behemoth left in ruins by the Battle for Berlin in 1945. The building was stripped and restored by the West German government during the 1960s, then further repaired and crowned with a new glass dome in time for the new millennium. Before the new construction began, Christo and Jeanne-Claude finally gained permission to wrap the building after decades of lobbying. The effort was seen as a symbol of reunification, drawing millions of Germans to physically interact with what would once more be the seat of their government for the first time since 1933.
